TIMELINE: A few months after Wanwan has just recently joined the Oriental Fighters.
INSPIRATION: Wanwan's iconic Easter egg line when teamed up with Ling.
WARNING: None.
"Ling, it's so hard to see your smile."
The words were said in a melancholic tone, far from the bubbly and high pitch Wanwan's voice usually carried. It made a feeling akin to guilt poke at his chest. Ling's body tensed and continued to sit there stiffly.
Why did he feel guilty? He shouldn't be. If he didn't want to smile, then he wouldn't. Smiling was for fools anyway.
Even if it was Wanwan who requested he smile, he wouldn't. Because Ling did not care for her or what she felt. He definitely didn't, he told himself desperately.
Those words repeated inside his head, like a broken song recorder, reminding Ling to close himself off, to isolate anyone who could possibly break the barrier around his feelings that he worked so hard to build.
Footsteps approached him, and he immediately knew who it was judging from the energy radiating from the movements. Avoiding the look of the person in front of him, he trained his eyes on the wall of the other side of the room.
"Lingling."
"Wanwan." He said in return. The nickname she gave him didn't even annoy him anymore, much to his surprise. But it still definitely annoyed him if it was any other person who used it, such as Zilong. It once earned Zilong a punch in the gut when he refused to stop, finally making him drop it. But Ling knew that Zilong still liked to use the name behind his back just to annoy him. That bastard.
"Smile for me, Ling." The girl whined.
"No." came the immediate answer.
"Then at least look at me." She groaned as Ling continued to sit there silently, still staring at the wall.
A mumble of "why are you so grumpy, don't you think it's too young to be turning into an old man yet?" was said so softly it almost went unnoticed by Ling, but he had heard, making him scowl.
However, the scowl immediately vanished when Wanwan sat on his lap facing his front, so now she was effectively straddling him. This finally got him to look at her, right at her golden brown eyes that always made his heart melt. The position wasn't uncomfortable, in fact in felt nice (not he would ever admit it), but he could feel the blush threatening to break his usually impassive expression.
Ling refused to get flustered though, so instead he asked in a panicked tone, "Wanwan, what do you think you're doing?" His hands lay at his sides in an awkward manner, not sure where it was appropriate to place on the girl while Wanwan's hands were leisurely placed on his chest.
"I'm just sitting on your lap, is it not allowed?" She put her finger on her chin, genuine curiosity in her eyes. She looked so innocent it almost hurt.
"I always did this with daddy back home when I wanted to play, and then he would tickle my sides!"
"Well, you're a big girl now, Wanwan. You shouldn't be sitting on men's laps anymore." He tried to scold her, but it was proving to be difficult as their close proximity was very distracting. Ling braved on.
"If you used to do this with your... erm- daddy, then do it with him only. I'm not your daddy."
"Then you're my daddy now! Daddy Ling!" She exclaimed enthusiastically.
