Red, orange and peachy pink spreaded across the sky like a disease as the sun started to set. Oh no, it’ll be night soon. Maddie and her little brother Fin still couldn’t find a way out of this thick bushy forest. Their parents had taken them out on a camping trip, in the wilderness of course. Maddie hated the woods, she couldn’t stand the animal noises at night and the smell of mud. Fin, however, loved the woods even going as far to rip open logs and eat the grubs and whatever he could find.
"When are we going home?” Fin’s cute happy face looked up at Maddie. Maddie couldn’t bring herself to tell her brother that they were lost, he looked to be having fun, if she told him he’ll probably cry or say that she was lying, and then throw mud at her. Maddie didn’t reply to Fin’s question, she was too busy figuring out how to get out of this maze of trees and grass. Swarms of crickets hopped around the grassy ground as Fin and Maddie made their way north. Tuis flew just above them, laughing at them for getting lost and a wild black cat with a dead baby possum in its mouth took one look at the siblings and then bolted for the trees.
A distant train sound filled the air, making a flock of birds rise into the sky.
“A train? Maybe we can ask the people there for directions!” Maddie’s face lit up as she grabbed her brother’s hand and dragged him through the forest towards the sound. Finally a chance to find home, and maybe if we’re lucky we can get a ride in the train! Maddie thought hopefully. She imagined a bright red train with a yellow stripe along the sides, and millions of people and conductors there, waiting to help her and Fin get back to their parents. Her sneakers hit the mossy concrete path, leading to an old abandoned train station. Maddie’s face dropped, how was she going to find help when there are no people to help her?
“Trains!” Fin said excitedly, not understanding the fact the place was empty.
“No ones here, Fin, we have to go back.” Maddie said in her baby voice. Fin looked up at her in disbelief, he ripped his hand away from hers and sprinted for the train station.
“Fin! Come back!” Maddie followed Fin into the station, her blue boots flicked up mud onto her jeans as she tried to catch up with her brother.A bird flew past Maddie’s face as she entered the dark damp deserted station. Maddie wiped her face from all the sweat that had gathered on her face. Where is Fin? Suddenly she heard what sounded like someone trying to open a jar of pickles, Fin was at the other side of the building. A long rusty red train was parked on the tracks, moss covering its windows and twigs from past bird nests cramped in between its joints. Fin was pulling the train door wanting to look inside it, but rust and moss sealed it shut.
“Come on Fin, let's go, that door won't budge even if it wanted to.” Maddie huffed, still tired from running.
“No!” Fin stamped his feet in anger “I’m not moving until I have gone inside this train!” Fin made a pouty face. Maddie sighed, she knew that he would be stubborn. Might as well help him, I mean what could go wrong? It's just an abandoned train, the worst that could happen is that we get chased by a rat. Maddie and Fin started tugging at the oxidized door, bits of moss and rust chipped off with every pull. BANG! The door opened with a crash, leaving Fin and Maddie down on the ground, birds and mice scattered out of the opening.
“Wow, we actually got it open.” Before Maddie could stand up Fin rushed inside the train “Fin!” Maddie yelled.
“Train!” Fin replied, his voice distant. Maddie rolled her eyes then ran after him, for the second time. Her footsteps echoed in the silver insides of the train. Moldy red seats lined the sides of the train, and multiple windows either had cracks on them or small holes big enough to put one of your fingers in it. Vines and plants covered the roof of the train, making it look like the forest again. Maddie could hear her brother’s footsteps, yet he was nowhere to be seen, she keeped her eyes looking forward determined to catch up. Eventually, she reached the end of the long train only a rusted door greeted her.
“Fin! Fin! Where are you?” Maddie shouted frantically. Maybe he went through the door. Maddie yanked the door. Locked. A quiet giggle emerged from under one of the musty seats behind her. Hiding of course. She couldn’t help but smile at Fin’s attempt to hide, I mean he always liked playing games at the least sensible time.
“Ok Fin, come out I can hear you.” The laughing stopped but Fin didn’t appear. “Come on Fin.” Maddie was starting to get frustrated, she searched the first two seats behind her then the giggling started again. Now I know where you are. Maddie walked slowly and almost threatening like down to the seat the chuckling was coming from.
“Oh well looks like I can’t find Fin” Maddie paced back and forth as she loudly exclaimed sarcastically “looks like I better go home!” The laughing grew louder with each word that came out of Maddie’s mouth. Maddie giggled along, ready to pounce.
“Aha!” Maddie slammed down onto the floor, as fast as a lighting, and peered under the seat expecting to see Fin’s surprised face.Author's note:
