Warnings: Fluff (kinda), angst, betch Snape

Y/N's POV:

"Sev!" I called out to my best friend Severus Snape. He turned around and smiled when he saw me. It was a small smile, barely even visible, but I knew how rare it was for him to smile, and that small, barely visible smile meant the world to me.

"Hey, how was charms?" I asked as I caught up to him. "You would not believe what an idiot Potter is! He and his goons spent all day disrupting class, and Lily actually found it funny! I'll never understand what she sees in him." He finished with a huff, dropping his face in his hands.

I gave him a sad, reassuring, smile, "Don't worry Sev, you'll find someone else, someone better" He raised his head and looked at me sadly, "I don't want someone else, I want her."

And that basically sums up the whole thing. A classic tale of 'I like him, but he likes her and she's with someone else. What made it even more complicated was that we were all best friends at one point, but ever since Lily began dating James Potter, she seemed to have forgotten Severus and I exist.

"I just- I can't stand it Y/N! He's not good enough for her" he looked so genuinely upset, more angry than heartbroken. "Get your mind off it Sev. Have you gotten a date for the Yule Ball yet?" I smiled excitedly at him. "I have better things to do than dance in a hall with sweaty teenagers in stuffy clothes, thank you very much" he rolled his eyes at me. "Oh come on Sev! Let's go together as friends, it'll be fun!" I smiled up at him. He looked at me and I saw the corners of his mouth lift a bit. "Fine. But only for you"

~time skip to the week before the Yule Ball because I'm lazy~

The weeks leading up to the Yule ball were nothing short of amazing. I had even managed to get Severus genuinely excited about it, even though he would never admit it, in fact, he probably hadn't even realised it yet. We had spent most of our time together, and he hadn't even mentioned Lily once.

I was walking to my next class, smiling to myself as I thought about how much happier Severus had seemed in the last couple of days, when I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Y/N/N, do you have your dress for the Yule Ball yet?" Severus asked. "Uhhhh, no, I was hoping to get it this weekend at hogsmeade." He smiled at this. "Great! We could go together, I haven't gotten a suit yet, maybe you could help me pick one out?" I was dumbfounded. Was he- was he asking me out? Was I looking into it too much? He probably just wanted to go as friends. "Yeah! I'd love that" I smiled at him.

~time skip to hogsmeade because~

It was a particularly cold morning at hogsmeade, and in my excitement and haste I had left my coat in my dorm. Severus and I walked beside each other in a comfortable silence. I must have been subconsciously rubbing by arms because Severus soon spoke up. "Are you cold?" He looked at me, a hint of worry in his eyes. "Oh, no I'm fine, I just forgot my coat in my dorm" he rolled his eyes at me and then draped his coat over my shoulders. It smelt heavenly, no cologne or anything, just that herb-y smell that belonged to him. I snuggled up in it and tried to hide my blush.

We walked for a little bit longer until we reached a shop that sold dresses and suits. Severus held the door open for me, and I tried to contain the butterflies I felt. We walked around a bit and looked at a couple of dresses but nothing really caught our eyes. That was until I noticed that Severus was no longer beside me. I turned around and saw him staring in awe at a gorgeous emerald green ball gown. "You have to try this on Y/N/N" he insisted.

I smiled at him. He looked so cute when he was trying to hide his excitement. "Okay... but you aren't allowed to see me in it until the Yule Ball, I want it to be a surprise." I tried to hide my blush in hopes that he wouldn't see it and think of the idea as stupid. "In the meantime, you go look for a matching suit." He hesitated and then gave me a small smile "you're so cute when you're shy" he kissed me gently on the cheek. "I'll be in aisle three, where the suits are, meet me there when you're done"

He kissed me... and that made me the happiest I had been in the longest time. Maybe he did have feelings for me, maybe he had finally realised that it was me who has been there all along. I smiled like an idiot as he casually strolled to aisle three as if the gesture meant nothing to him.

Severus' POV:

"Okay... but you aren't allowed to see me in it until the Yule Ball, I want it to be a surprise." She looked down shyly, but her attempts to hide the redness in her cheeks had failed. Was she... blushing? "In the meantime, you go look for a matching suit." I was about to leave and search for a suit, when I noticed Lily and James walk in. They both noticed me, and I could almost hear what James was whispering to Lily, probably something along the lines of: "Poor little Snivellus, had to take force his friend to go the Yule Ball with him, tsk tsk tsk, I feel sorry for Y/N, who would want to go to with him?" No. I refused to let them pity me, and in my selfishness I made a decision. I turned to Y/N, "you're so cute when you're shy" I then kissed her cheek and left without spearing her a second glance. I did however notice the brief look of shock on Lily and James' face. That brief look of shock was all it took for my guilt to melt away.

I made my way to aisle three, picked out an emerald greed velvet suit, and awaited Y/N's return.

Y/N's POV:

I tried on the dress and it looked beautiful. I felt... pretty? There was no way I wasn't getting it, and the fact that Severus picked it out just made it all the more special to me.

I changed back into my normal clothes and headed towards Severus. He had picked out a velvet suit that went perfectly with my dress. I couldn't wait to see him in it.

"Are you ready to leave?" Severus asked. He seemed a little off, but I pushed it aside. I nodded my head and we made our way to pay. The dress had costed a little more than I had expected, but luckily I had packed a few extra galleons. Before Severus and I left, I turned around to thank the shop owner and noticed Lily and James, hmm maybe they had been doing last minute shopping as well.

On our way back to hogwarts, Severus and I laughed and chatted about the Yule ball. He kept asking questions. "What are you going to do with your hair Y/N? Have you gotten your shoes yet? You know how to waltz right? Wait, do you? Do you need me to teach you how to waltz?" I laughed lightly, calm down Sevy, I have everything sorted out, and yes, I do know how to waltz." He looked at me skeptically "Okay good. I just... want this evening to be perfect... for us."

He said 'us'. There was an 'us'. My heart nearly leapt out of my chest. He was trying so hard to make this evening perfect, I wondered if he had something planned...

Severus' POV:

This evening had to be perfect. I had to show Lily that I was fine without her. I needed to prove that I didn't need her. No matter what it takes.
