3 ᴀᴍ𝐀NTHONY TREMAINE had been running for what felt like twenty minutes. That was a long time, at least in his book. And Anthony hated running. He was already fortunate enough to be born with a non-hideous face -unlike the rest of these lowlifes- and had a good build, why should he exhaust himself with exercise? Well, he had a good reason, he was running for his life.
His heart was beating against his chest and he could feel the sweat on his forehead, he couldn't go on much longer. But he had to which sucked because he could tell they were getting closer. He could hear the small shrieks from people in second-story homes and banging against the metal. They liked making a scene. They liked letting you escape and gain an ounce of hope that you actually had a chance, only to swiftly take it away from you at the last second. But they especially loved hunting you. He remembered cheering with them during one of Hell Hall's infamous parties celebrating the seventh anniversary of one of their parent's deaths. He remembered the times he would smile politely at the girls in a way to show that he meant respect. So how could he have been so careless as to show off and boast that he could manage to get away with tricking any of them? Of course it got back to them, of course they had spies planted everywhere.
His little affairs with them went unnoticed at first. They often brought different people with them to parties or to do more mischievous things. The real kicker was once he got with Evie. And then Jay. He was invited to stick around a bit longer. And he liked it. He liked the feeling of being special, of being given this almost once-in-a-lifetime possibility of being on their radar. And then he had to fuck it up. "Oh please, you don't know the half of it. I've fucked two of them already, give me another couple of months and I'll have them wrapped around my finger."
"Anthony, I'd be careful with that, you're playing with fire." Ginny Gothel tried to warn him against the loud booming music of Castle Across The Way. The place was half scorched and half the bricks were knocked down but it made for an interesting party venue. And why wouldn't it? Evie was celebrating her mother's seventh year passing. "And if you haven't thought about it, take a good look around this place. They like playing with fire and you're in over your head."
Anthony just gave her one of his infamous Tremaine scowls. For an attractive boy, it certainly made him look ugly. "Just because you can't get Mal in bed does not mean you get to decide who gets in mine. In fact," he slurred his words, his breath smelling like bad ale, "I bet I can get the fey girl to try out for the other team." He laughed like it was the funniest thing he ever said. "She's barely been with anyone since you-know-who, it'd barely take me ten minutes."
Ginny tried saying something, anything, to get him to stop talking until he found more people. "Anthony, I'm serious—"
"Hey! Rick, Eddie, how ya'll doing?" He called them over, "Did I ever tell you about my time with Jay Amir? The guy is an animal."
That's the last of what Anthony could remember, the rest of it was an alcohol-induced blur of dancing and even more drinking.
The real question was why he wasn't surprised. These freaks turned on their own blood, why should he be any different? He turned a corner that had the familiar sea-green graffiti decorating the alley walls. Two more blocks and he was at Uma's Territory, at least there he could survive a couple more nights. But the second he stepped foot down that alley, a ssching! made him freeze. In front of him was a knife embedded in one of the various tagged King Beast posters. It barely missed him by an inch. Carlos. Of course, he was their opening act. The sicko carried so much metal around he wondered how he didn't make any noise when he was skulking around.
