Celes rolled her eyes as she listened to her older neighbor Eli talk on the phone with his girlfriend. He was supposed to be watching her per father's request as he went out of town to collect a few things. What those things where she'd probably never know, these days he was secretive, at least it seemed that way the older she had gotten. Her parent's becoming slightly paranoid and whispering amongst one another. All Celes could only hope for was them not having a hallmark movie moment and telling her she had a none curable decease.
But to the fourteen-year-old it looked exactly like that, un-alarmed by Eli's return to his bedroom she sat her books aside on the floor, grabbing the plate he handed her way.
"My bad jelly bean had a few things to handle. Did you start on your homework at least?" he said with a dimpled grin her way. She simply gave him a nod.
"E, I know our parents are friends have been for a while, but do you ever ask them what it is they do on their business trips?" she watched as his face straightened up. His eyes peeved his quizzical expression and for just a moment she watched as he figured out a lie nibbling at her bottom lip she sighed in disappointment.
"Nevermind, I think I hear my mom's car driving in. Thanks for the food E" the teenage girl slipped into her shoes, quickly tossing the few books she took out back into her oversized PINK tote bag.
"I'll put this in the fridge" she saw him trying to read her, but she didn't bother to give him any indication that she was on to him lying or that she even held the slightest bit of disappointment in him for it.
The bottom of her shoes tapped at the hardwood as she headed downstairs lightly jogging to the kitchen, hearing his footsteps behind her.
"Bean, there are just some things we don't need to know" she let him dig himself into a deeper hole as she covered the plate in foil before setting it on the second shelf of the refrigerator. Pulling out her iPhone 4, she skimmed to the few texts she had missed while finishing the little assignments she had left.
"I didn't ask you about what we didn't need to know. I asked you what you knew" she raised her brow. It was in the manner her mother would've probably done to her.
Eli hadn't a clue, how his kid neighbor carried so much sass in her tone. It was obvious she was wise beyond her years, but in other moments you saw her youth. He enjoyed that aspect of her. "Looks kid you aren't going to get anything out of me, because there isn't anything to get out. Stop searching for things Nancy Drew" teasing as he leaned against the wall.
"Alright bum, I'll see you whenever you decided to leave that campus or that roach motel you call an apartment" beaming a bright smile as she exited the house.
He stopped her right in her tracks his hand at the top of her messy bun. "Last I checked me having my own is what made me not a bum, crumb snatcher" she pursed her lips before quickly turning around giving a small neck roll.
"You may live there and your name is on the lease, but don't think I don't know about daddy's little funds" wasting no time he pulled her into a headlock. Leave it to Celes to start something before she was out the door. Trying to hold back her laughter, she slid in a few smart remarks that were sure to get his panties in a bunch.
"Get outta my house with your praying mantis looking ass" she gave him the bird all before heading out the front door and crossing over into her backyard. There wasn't a need to head into her house just yet, especially when her mother would be in her garden pruning away at some special plant she picked up from her latest adventure.
"Well well if it isn't Better Homes & Garden ... back from your trip so soon?" a smile tugged at her lips as she watched the older woman hurry in her direction to pull her into a hug.
