Freshman year, the time when you take the past and forget about it and think about the future, a fresh start. Unless you were me, Skylar, and your fresh start started off as your parents dropped you and your brother, Ty, off at school in their broken down, rusty, old van. What's even worse is when they kiss you on the cheek in front of all your friends. In front of me, I had my friends, Camille and her twin brother Cameron, Brett with his older brother, Dylan, Lita, whom I had been friends with for nine years, Claire and her boyfriend Carson, and last but not least, Conner, my very good friend and longest crush. As I looked around I noticed that a few people were missing, Jenny and Bella. Then I remembered that Jenny moved 2,000 miles away to California, and Bella was in the hospital with her boyfriend, Oliver, while she battled cancer. I realized while I stood there that you couldn't find a weirder group of friends because, after all, what are friends without a little weirdness?
As I walked to class, I "overheard" a conversation between Conner and Brett. When I say "overheard," I mean I snooped to see what they were talking about. I was very disgruntled about what I heard.
"Best summer ever! Dude, the beaches were unbelievable, all the girls had fine ass booties," exclaimed Brett, as they walked to their first period class.
"Dude, shut up! We're in school. Anyone could have heard that!" Whisper-yelled Conner, as he looked around to make sure no one was listening.
"Relax, no one heard anything." Brett replied calmly, as they turned down the science hallway.
"Hey, what are you guys talking about?" I asked, while running to catch up to them.
"Nothing, nothing at all." They replied sheepishly, while their faces turned bright red from blushing too hard.
"Okay... That was awkward," I replied, looking confused.
"Who do you have for first period?" Conner asked me, trying to change the subject from what him and Brett just talked about.
"I have Mr. Wright, I heard he's a really bad teacher. Always going off track about his family and their problems. Who do you have?" I asked, as we arrived in Mr. Wright's classroom.
"Ugh! Lucky, I have Mrs."Crack Cocaine", as people like to call her. Her real name is Mrs. Robinson, and my brother, Dylan, had her and he said she was a mess. She never teaches you anything, and she goes on and on about tasting the rainbow." Brett replied jokingly.
"I have Mr. Wright with you, Sky. Hopefully, we get a seat near each other." He said, while he walked into class and waved goodbye to Brett.
I stopped at the doorway, every bone in my body went limp. I hadn't heard that name in forever. The only person who called me Sky, is Conner. Just the way it sounds coming from his lips made it sound different from when I heard it from other people. On top of that he wanted a seat near me! Questions raced through my head. Does he like me? Are we just friends? Does he want to be more than friends? The bell rung above my head, and I snapped back into reality, as Mr. Wright yelled at me to take a seat. I glanced over at Conner as he gestured for me to come sit next to him. But I heard someone else calling my name across the room, and I realized that it was Camille. I had only a second before I would've got into trouble again. I had to make a decision, either my best friend who I hadn't seen all summer or my longest crush. So I walked towards Camille glancing back to see the disappointed look on Conner's face. I tried to mouth "I'm sorry," but he turned around and faced the front of the class. I sat down next to Camille feeling crestfallen on the decision I had made, and wished to myself that I went over to Conner and sat next to him.
"Hey! What's wrong? You look upset?" asked Camille with a quizzical look on her face.
"Nothing. I'm fine," I answered, still thinking about what I have done with mine and Conner's relationship, hoping that I didn't mess anything up and he would forgive me.
"I know that face and I know you, and you are not fine. What's wrong?" Camille asked, more forcefully than the last time.
"Well, if you must know, you might have ruined any chance of Conner and I in a relationship. So, thanks but no thanks, I don't need your help." I snapped back at Camille.
"Okay, okay, jeez sorry. I'll just go sit someplace else. Some place where I'm actually wanted." Camille replied while she stood up and pushed in her chair.
"Wait, Camille. I'm sorry. I shouldn't blame you. It was my choice to sit over here, and I'm sorry for yelling at you." I said, as I pulled her chair out, so she could sit down next to me.
"It's fine, but you shouldn't blame me for you choosing to sit over here." She replied, as she sat back in her seat.
"I know and I'm sorry. I should've sat over here anyways. I haven't seen you all summer, how have you been? How was The Club while I was away?" I asked, hoping that she would forgive me for snapping at her.
"My summer was fantastic. My parents sent me to an art camp for two weeks and sent Cameron to spend the whole summer with our grandma in Colorado. The Club was fine, everybody showed up at the meetings. We discussed some stuff about The Gang. All in all a pretty good summer." Camille said, as Mr. Wright passed out the papers we were doing in class.
Now you may be wondering, what the hell is "The Club" and "The Gang"? Long story short, it's two groups of friends. "The Club" are the girls and "The Gang" are the guys. The two groups battled it out with pranks wars. The only rule was that you are not allowed to date anyone that was in the other group unless, you were dating before the groups were made.
The wars began after The Gang decided to play a prank on the girls in The Club. The pranks started off as just being a joke, but then it got serious when they messed with our phones. First they just took them and hid them someplace where we couldn't find it. Then they decided it would be funny to change our passwords, so we wouldn't be able get into our phones. The last straw was when they posted the embarrassing picture of us on our instagram. The pranks have gone on since then. Every month we voted on who had the best pranks and whoever won would get The Crown of Glory. Right now the crown is in the guys possession, but that not gonna stop us from getting it back.
"Any pranks happen while I was gone?" I asked hoping that the answer would be no.
"Would you count us taking all of their clothes and throwing the in the dumpster while they were in the pool a prank?"she asked while cracking up hysterically.
"Well, I guess you could count that as the best prank ever!" I said as we both start crying from laughing too hard.
I glanced over at Conner and I thought about how my crush started, but then I saw something that distracted me. I see him going to the bathroom. But what I thought was suspicious was the fact that it was first period and Brett stood outside of the classroom giving me the evil eye.
"Oh great. Look at the door. I think the prank war has begun." I mumbled to Camille as we start packing up for the end of class.
She glanced over at the door and replied "Oh, great! Why would they do this on the first day of school?"
"Because they're trying to make our lives living hell and win the prank war for this month" I replied as I glanced back outside the door where Brett and Conner were whispering something into Cameron's ear.
The bell rung and everybody ran out the door in a hurry to get to their next class. The only people left were Camille and I. We slowly walked out the door aware that the boys could prank us at any moment. All of the sudden Conner, Brett, and Cameron jumped out of the bushes and yelled "let the pranks begin!"
