As I walked out of my second period calculus class I was not in a good mood, which should not come as a surprise to anyone since it's calculus but today my sour mood was from something else. We had just gotten back our marks for Mr.Walters latest pop quiz and let's just say I didn't do great on it.
As I threw my locker door open I let out a large sigh of frustration, of all the days to get this mark back, why did it have to be today?
"What's got you all upset today?" My best friend Bri asked me, making me jump from her surprise appearance.
"Look at this test I got back today" I started passing her my test as I grabbed my lunch from my locker.
"What kind of teacher gives pop quizzes? We've literally only been back for two weeks and he's already handing out tests." I tell her, still fuming.
"Dude it's not that big of a deal, it's only the first test of the semester, I'm sure you can make it up" she told me, trying to reassure me.
"I know, I know you're right I just really did not need this today" I told her, with a sigh.
She looked at me with concern before asking,
"Are you sure you're okay today? I can come over tonight if you don't wanna be alone. I haven't agreed to babysitting the Reynolds kids yet. If you want me to back out and hang with you instead I'll do it" She asked sincerely.
"I told you I'm fine. Take the job, I know you need that money" I said, making eye contact with her. I knew she'd been saving up to buy a car for months, so that she wouldn't have to share her moms and I was not going to get in the way of her making some extra money. Especially knowing that the Reynolds pair nicely when you babysat for them.
"Okay fine, I'll take it" she said, seeming hesitant.
I know she was concerned for me and I'm not gonna lie to myself, tonight was going to be hard, but I didn't want to hold her back.
You see the thing about tonight is that it's the 2 year anniversary of my moms death. It was 2 years ago today that my mom got into an accident on her way home and hasn't come back since. I missed her so much and every year on the anniversary it was especially hard.
I could feel tears welling up in my eyes so I quickly blinked them away before anyone could notice.
"Be strong today Celeste" I told myself, "it's what she would want, you're going to be okay" I repeated this mantra I had made for myself in my head until a loud clapping sound, coming from Bri, broke me out of my trance.
"You sure you're okay?" She asked, clearly not believing my facade.
"Yes! Stop looking at me like that I'm fine! Let's just head to lunch I'm starving" I told her, finally ending the conversation.
"Fine, but I'm only dropping this cause I have some serious gossip to share with you that I heard in my English class this morning" she shared, finally smiling.
I just rolled my eyes at her and followed along as she lead the way to the cafeteria.

When we were finally at the caf and had sat down I turned to Bri,
"Okay can you please take that devilish grin off your face and just share with me what you overheard today" I told her, with a bit of an annoyed tone to my voice.
"Okay fine, but only because you said please" she responded, grinning wider.
I threw a grape at her
"Ow! What was that for?" She asked feigning anger.
"Get on with the gossip!" I told her
Bri and I had been best friends ever since grade 9. We had both started our first year of high school off with different friends, but as the year went on and it became clear that some people were more concerned about social status rather than substance we slowly broke away from those "friendships" and found each other. It was during a second period worm dissection lab in Mrs.Hathaways science class that we truly bonded over our shared interest of cheesy teen dramas and how much we hated the smell of formaldehyde. We'd basically been inseparable since.
"Celeste! Are you even listening to me?" Bri asked, breaking me out of my trance.
"Shit, sorry! I don't know where my heads at today, what were you saying?" I asked her, apologetically.
She gave me a concerned face until she remembered what she had been talking about and quickly her lips turned up into a smile.
"Guess which residential high school couple got into a screaming match outside of my English class this morning?" She questioned.
I gave her a blank stare, followed by a shrug to signal my confusion to her.
"Owen Williams and Maggie Atwood" Bri said, seeming very happy with herself for coming across this gossip.
When I didn't have much of a reaction I could tell she was disappointed. Although I usually found a small bit of enjoyment from school gossip, I wasn't always excited to hear about it when concerning Owen Williams.
Owen and I had been best friends since we came out of the womb, our moms had worked for the same newspaper company so when they both found out they were pregnant at the same time you could imagine their excitement. For a while Owen and I were like two sides of the same coin. Until we both got to high school and everyone found out he had a talent for swimming, and soon I was left in the dust while he went on to make new and more popular friends instead. It's not that I was bitter but when you're friends with someone the way I was friends with him it hurts when they leave, especially since he didn't even have the decency to say goodbye.
"Oh wow that's crazy" I finally said, trying to pretend to be as excited about this news as Bri was, but failing miserably.
"You're a terrible liar you know?" she said, smirking at me.
"What were they even fighting about?" I asked her, letting curiosity get the better of me.
"Well I couldn't totally hear what they were saying, but Libby who sits next to me in English told me that Sarah saw Maggie making out with Aaron at some party she threw on Saturday" she said, beaming from all the gossip she was unloading.
Now that surprised me, Maggie may be a bit on the mean side when it came to personalities, but if there's one thing everyone knows she loves it's Owen.
"How do you even know that's true?" I asked her, shocked.
"I mean isn't their little screaming match in the hallway proof enough?" She asked, starting to wave her arms around from excitement.
I laughed at her for the gesture.
We continued to laugh and joke around with each other as we ate lunch, until the bell rang for classes and we went our separate ways.
