Honk! Honk! I woke up to the sound of a duck? or a bicycle horn? As I woke up, my vision was still a blur. Soon, my eyes adjusted to the light. I looked out the window and saw Dexter Academy. I sigh.
I walk to my locker and look at the photos of my older friends. I then run my finger along the crisp edges. I miss them so much. I force myself to look away, grab my duffel bag and walk to homeroom. Mrs. Freet is working on her computer. I knock on the door. She looks up and ushers me in. She grabs my duffle bag and checks it. We aren’t allowed to have anything that could help us solve the test. Mrs. Freet rummages through my stuff, pulling out all the insides.
“You’re clear.”
I nod. I walk to the back of the room and sit down. My book is sitting on the top of my duffel bag.

“The girl was frozen with fear, stared blankly at the barn straight ahead. It stood motionless ahead. She walked slowly towards it, regretting the decision she just made.”
This is as far as I get before Mrs. Freet walks up and raps her bony and frail hand on my desk.
“Miss Kinsley, stop reading!” She is so close I can see her nostrils flaring. “Reading can expose the brain to unnecessary information!”
I know she is talking about the 21st Century. People in this time don’t read because the society doesn’t want us learning about “past”.
But, I put the book down on the duffel bag. She is still staring at me.
I put my hands up like when a fugitive surrenders. I say, “What do you want, lady?!”
I can’t believe I just said that! Oh gosh! Ms. Freet is going to kill me! I breathe in and out slowly.
Ms. Freet walks up, grabs my book, and puts it in the trash.
No!!! Ok, fine! Do want you want! I don’t care!

I walk into the cafeteria. The other grades are sitting down as well. They are enjoying their lives right now. But, the 10th graders are whispering in a tense voice. I feel like a giant walking to my table. I feel as if life shouldn’t exist. Or maybe I shouldn’t exist?
“Hey Ran!! What’s up!!”
I feel a hand slap my back. God! That got me out of my slump! I turn around and see my best friend Skye.
“Skye! You nearly gave me a heartattack!”
“Sorry! I just excited for you know what!”
“You're excited about everything.”
“I know!”
I pat the chair next to me. Skye sits down in it. I engage in a conversation with her.
