In class, Etta sat, daydreaming. The Christmas break would be here before she knew it! This meant she would be free of homework and classes, and able to ride Stel all she wanted, and above all else, her father would come home this year! Her first Christmas with her father! Etta had no siblings, but she thought that if she did, it would be a lot like what she had with Maddy. Maddy has a family, a mother and a father. She didn't have any siblings either but sometimes Etta envied her relationship with her parents. Twelve years ago, March 31, a baby girl, Margretta, had been born. It had been a trade. A life for another, and Etta had been left motherless. Her father loved his daughter so much. He spent whatever free time he had with her. Sadly, this was not much. Johnn was a paleontologist, which meant he was away a lot. Consequently, he was forced to send his daughter to a boarding school. This meant he would not spend the Christmas break with her. Ever since she had turned three, Etta had been raised in the boarding school. She had spent all the Christmas' she could remember there, and the teachers had served as her family. In particular, Hansengrove as a sort of mother. Ever since she had been in kindergarten, Hansengrove had been the one to wipe her tears, and put bandaids on her seared knees. Hansengrove also spent her Christmas' with Etta, while other teachers took turns to stay or go home. The summer was the only time she had her father all to herself. All the kids went home then, but for half of each summer, Etta had to stay at the school. While Tim and November stayed at the school for Christmas break, in the summers, Hansengrove alone stayed with Etta, so that it was only them in the whole school.

The bell went off. It was the end of English class. Etta gathered her things and left.
She entered the history class.
They were working on the Renaissance period, and Etta loved it.

After history was the break, usually the time Mrs Longwood brought out the freezies. The students gathered in the cafeteria and took a seat. Mrs Longwood was there with a box of freezies. Hansengrove came in and stood by the freezies. She placed her hand on the box.

-"So, I bet you want to know who won my little competition?" She asked the class.

The class shouted out "yes".

-"Alright. In last place, Tamer and Shadow." She declared.

He laughed sheepishly.

-"In fifth place, Thomas and Discord. In fourth, Rebecca and Rainbow."

Thomas made a face. The whole class held their breaths.

-"In third, Anne" she said.

-"In second... Etta." She said

Etta let out a breath she hadn't known she'd been holding. She knew who had won right then.

-"And in first place, Maddy!" She declared, "It was close, but in the end, Maddy was the fastest by 2 seconds." She said, smiling at Etta.

Mrs Longwood opened the box and beckoned Maddy forth. She picked a blue freezy. Etta came and took a white one. When everyone had a freezy, they sat and talked for the rest of the break.
