Walking through the dark cemetery, nothing but the crackling sounds of the leaves under my feet being heard throughout this cold night. Looking at the bouquet of flowers in my hand, I couldn’t help but wonder if they were enough.
Were they enough to show her my gratitude? They had to be…right?
As I get to her grave, I see him standing there. I’m guessing he heard me coming because he turned his face towards me, giving me a warm smile.
“Hey mate.” He says as I get to him, shaking his hand.
“Hey.” I simply reply, not knowing what else to say.
He sighed as he looked down at the grave, a sad smile forming on his lips. “She was an amazing person…”
“Yeah, I know.” I whisper.
“I’m glad a part of her is still alive.”
I smile and nod, slowly placing the flowers on the grave.
“Take care of them, Zayn.” He tells me. “Take good care of them.”
“I will. And take care of yourself, yeah?”
He nods. “I’ll see you, mate.”
“See you.” I reply.

I can’t count how many nights I’ve woken up to an empty bed, and this night is no different. Glancing at the clock, I sigh as I notice it’s 4 in the morning, the bed feeling too cold as the place beside me is unoccupied.
I close my eyes to try and fall asleep again when I hear Jacob’s cries. Groaning, I get up from the bed and walk out of the room, towards their room.
As I opened the door, I couldn’t help but smile at the sight in front of me.
“Shh, come on honey, you’re going to wake daddy up.” She whispers to him.
“Too bad I’m already awake.” I say, startling her.
“Oh my god!” She says, her hand on her chest. “You scared me!”
I chuckle as she opens her eyes, her bright green eyes as perfect as always. “Do you know how many times I’ve woken up without you beside me?”
She smiles as she puts Jacob down and walks over to me, wrapping her arms around my neck. “But I’m always there in the morning. And besides, you came home late, I was already asleep.”
I lace our fingers together, leading her back to our room as we sit down on the bed, Gracie sitting between my legs, her back pressed against my chest. “I went to the cemetery again.”
“You could’ve told me, I wanted to go.”
“I don’t know…I just felt like I had to pay her a visit, you know? I don’t know how to show her my gratitude.”
She nods as I continue. “I saw her husband there. I feel so bad for him…I didn’t know what to tell him. He told me to take care of you guys and that he was happy a part of her was still alive.”
Gracie took a deep breath as she raised her hand to place it on her heart. “Do you think it’s fair?”
“What’s fair?”
