You’d think after one month of visiting this place, you’d get used to everything you see here. But every time I step foot into this building, my heart aches at the sight.
The young boy in the corner who twitches every few seconds.
The girl that’s holding a doll and singing to it as if it’s a baby.
The old man that yells every few minutes, thinking that something is coming at him.
“Mr. Malik.”
I turned around to see Gracie’s doctor. “Hello Dr. Jones.”
“How are you today? And how are the kids?” He asked me.
“The kids…well we’re all hanging in there.” I simply replied.
He smiled sadly. “I know it’s hard but this place will heal her.”
“How is she doing today?” I asked him.
“She’s still not talking. She just sits in her normal place on her bed and won’t look up. But today she started eating and we were happy to see that. We’re doing all we could to pull her out of her depression.”
“She used to take the anti-depressants while I was in the hospital.”
“That’s the thing. She was getting better at that time and then with everything that happened to her, she relapsed. Once someone relapses, it’s much harder to cure it but it can be cured with time.”
I nodded. “Thank you.”
“I’m sure with your help, we can get her back to normal in no time.” He said as he turned around and walked away.
I knew better than to knock on the door because it was useless. She never gets up from her spot.
As I closed the door behind me, I built of the strength to look at her. But the moment my eyes met with her body, I felt weak.
There was no life in her eyes. Her dull green eyes. The way her cheeks were now so hollow, making the bags under her eyes more prominent. Strands of her hair were loose and falling over her face as the rest was tied into a loose pony tail. She was bones. It was as if her body was still here but her soul was gone.
“Love…” I spoke quietly. “Gracie…”
But it was no use as she kept looking at the floor while hugging her knees. I walked closer to her and sat next to her on the bed. “How are you?”
No answer.
“We miss you.”
No answer.
“I love you.”
No answer.
“I know you can talk. You’re just too scared to talk. Baby, I was scared to wake up but I did it. You can talk. You can move. You don’t have to be scared of anything.”
Nothing.
I sighed as I looked at her hair. “How about I brush your hair for you?” I didn’t wait for her answer because there was no answer as I got the brush from the table by the bed and started brushing her hair. “Let loose, babe. Just relax. It’s only me.” I whispered to her as I pulled her closer to me.
I started humming the tune to one of her favorite songs as I felt her relax just a little bit. “Listen to your heart, when I’m calling for you. Listen to your heart, there’s nothing else you can do. I don’t know where you’re going and I don’t know why. But listen to your heart, before you tell me goodbye.” I felt the tears in my eyes as I heard her quiet sobs and that was the most I was able to get out of her. Somehow every time I would come here, we would always end up like this. “And there are voices that want to be heard. So much to mention but you can’t find the words. The scent of magic the beauty that’s been when love was wilder than the wind.”
