Incubus
Heaven was crying. Below the sobbing skies lied the open Earth and a vacant casket that was quickly beginning to flood with Heaven's tears. A body had been stolen from the grave, the intent to retrieve a soul sent above too soon all too clear.
Acceptance of the death of his lover was something Adorn could not healthily cope with nor come to accept. After three months of sinking deeper into his sorrow, tainting himself with alcohol to numb the pain, he realized he couldn't deal with it. The loss of his other half left him painfully empty, and with each passing day without him, the yearning to have him back in his arms, gazing into him with his sultry amber eyed, grew and grew.
Until it evolved into obsession.
Finishing preparing the candles at the corners of Ronan's body, Ezekiel watched as the tiny flames billowed with the draft in the room for a moment before he set his gaze on Adorn. His friend, who'd been on a continous regression for the past few months. His friend, who now planned to break the laws of their tribe, and use the forbidden ritual to reanimate the dead.
"Are you sure you want to go through with this?"Adorn did not hesitate. In fact, as his own ashen gaze swept over the dampened, lifeless body of his soulmate, his resolve was only strengthened.
"I'm positive. Unlock the box and hand me the book, Ezekiel."Though he obeyed his friend and did exactly that, the uncertainty began to weigh heavier and heavier on his heart.
"You know they say the last time this ritual was performed, it was unsuccessful, and the man trying to resurrect the dead paid for the attempt with his own.""I know."
"And that the village chiefs believe the last successful resurrection was performed around the 1600s."
"I know."
"Adorn.. it might not even be the Gods that we're trying to retrieve Ronan's soul from –" Ezekiel stopped mid-sentence; The stare Adorn gave him so unnerving he felt he had to shut up. It was a glare so cold yet soulless – for a moment, Ezekiel wondered if Adorn had grown so corrupt that he wouldn't think twice about murdering whoever got in his way.. even Ezekiel, his long time friend.
Then, in a voice so deadly calm and cold Ezekiel was taken aback, Adorn spoke. "If you don't want to be here, you don't have to be. But if you are suggesting my beloved –"
"No, no, Adorn! I helped and supported you this far, didn't I? And I'm not suggesting anything awful like that, I'm just.. worried, you know? I'm nervous."
Sighing, the man dropped his gaze once more to his lover, laying amidst drawn symbols and lit candles dancing around him. "I know. Sorry, Ezekiel, I just.. I need him back."
His friend responded by stepping closer, pushing the open book into his hands. Among the aged yellow pages lied the key to it all – in a foreign language unknown to all besides the elders in his tribe, was the transcription to reanimate the dead. To return the original soul to the body.
And without anymore time wasted, he began the incantation.
And even as he read the finishing lines – nothing had happened. Even as he repeated them.. and repeated them.. and began yelling into the pages as Ezekiel came to comfort him, Ronan's body was still. He was still dead.
