"...so I would like to try the gnocchi with Napoli and a water please." I could feel Nate staring at me in surprise. Since a month I had stopped drinking any kind of alcohol and he thought of it to be rather suspicious.
If only he knew... *sigh*
But thankfully he didn't say anything about it. We would talk later.
"So how is it to work in the office?" Eli asked him and sat down with us.
"It is really fun! Laura and I are a good team and actually have a lot in common. I'm pretty sure you all would like her too!" Excited he looked at us and we nodded.
Who is Laura?
"So yeah on a normal day I have about 8-10 patients coming in, while she is focusing on the paper work mostly. Laura is an intern by the way so I show her everything that I did as an intern and so far she is really good at her job!" He smiled happily and I wondered if he had misheard Elisabetta's question.
Surely she had asked for his point of view, not for his intern?
I started to get a little lost in thought about that Laura and didn't realize that everyone else had finished their dinner already, except me.
"...Lumi?"
"Huh?"
I looked up to see Mariella staring onto my forehead. She probably had been talking to me for a while now.
"I'm sorry, what did you say?" My cheeks reddened as I looked into her eyes.
She giggled and repeated herself. "I was just asking if there is something wrong with your food. You have been staring at it for almost ten minutes now."
Embarassed I picked up my fork. "No, it's delicious, I guess I just have been daydreaming." Quickly I started eating again so Nate and Mariella wouldn't have to wait for me.
Eli baked a surprise cake for Nate and we ate that too and then went home.
-
"Now that we're alone..." I whispered into his ear and gave him a kiss.
He kissed me back shortly but then stood up from the couch.
"I am really tired today, let's just go to sleep." He went up to our room straight after saying those painful words.
The rejection left a big hole in my chest. This was not the first time it happened.
Actually it was one of the many times. It seemed like Nate just didn't want to be close to me anymore. He became very reserved in the last months...
Does he want to break up with me?! How am I going to handle being a mother at such a young age without him?
Did he have another woman? Was it that Laura?
Silent tears began rolling down my cheeks and I went into the bathroom so he wouldn't be able to tell that I had cried.
I just hope he'll tell me what is wrong.
