MALORY'S POV
It has been two weeks since the incident at Ethan's place. I've been to his place about five times after that and he isn't home. His phone has been switched off. I can't help but worry about him. Just hoping he is safe and that nothing bad has happened to him.
Today, I have to go collect my dad's bereavement support payment. For some reason whatsoever, my mum accepted and signed the documents permitting me to be the one to collect this money. And it has helped so much with my fees and housing.
Before leaving for the government office, I call my mum to let me talk with Nathalie for a while. Hearing her beautiful voice will put me in a good mood, to deal with humans easily and not get annoyed because sometimes, it really is frustrating.
"Hello ma, how are you doing?" I ask as soon as my mum picks up.
"You should start by greeting properly," she says. "I didn't raise you to be uncultured and bad mannered....," she keeps talking while I come out for a few seconds
"Ma, I just want to know how you and Natalie are doing,"
"If not for Nathalie , would you ever call me?" She continues nagging. Of course I won't! Nobody wants to be nagged everyday. Me especially. But I can't tell her that for sure. My dad always told me I wasn't raised to be disrespectful.
I hear Nathalie in the background trying to get the phone so she can talk with me.
"Ma you know that's not how it is. I'm just checking up on you. I'm not trying to start a fight," I inform her rather calmly which is even surprising to me.
I'd normally start an argument when she does this, or I'd just drop the call. But today is different. Today, all I want to hear is my baby's voice.
"Just talk with her and drop the phone on me like you always do," is her reply.
"Hey baby," I say ignoring the fight ma is trying to start.
"Mommyyy," she replies, sounding very happy and high spirited.
"How are you natie?" I ask.
Nathalie has always been very chatty. Just one question and she is narrating her whole week and sometimes, the whole month.
We talk for about ten minutes in which she tells me what she was taught in school, how she has grown taller and made new friends. She is an amazingly intelligent kid.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
"I'm sorry miss. Your bereavement support payment is obsolete," the bad news echos in my head as I leave the government office.
I was hoping today will be a very good day, but to my biggest disappointment, the government did what they do best. Extort!
According to my calculations, I am still supposed to be paid for the next one year. Where has all that money gone to? What will I do? How will I afford money for rent?
This is one of those many times I wish I had a 'sugar daddy', someone to take care of my needs so I don't have to worry about them as much.
As I walk out of the government office with frustration written all over my face, I just keep wondering..... what next? What will happen to me? How do I move forward from all this?
