"Come on, Henry, hurry," Mel is urging Henry on, who is standing in his boxers in the common room, while she is unbuttoning her uniform shirt.
The scene I am presented with is surreal.
The whole common room is full of pubescent 17 and 18-year-olds in various stages of undressing. The girls in the small shorts we all wear underneath our skirts and tank tops, boys in T-shirts and boxers, uniforms flying back and forth and everyone yelling at each other.
I am leaning against the sliding doors to the side, arms crossed, watching my friends get undressed.
Lily and Tom disappeared to the bathroom so she wouldn't have to get changed with everyone else and Mel and Henry are laughing with everyone else about how lanky Timone's legs are.
Alright, I am leaving.
Fuck this.
Why should I watch everyone else have fun, while I can't? And no, I could not ask one of the nerds standing awkwardly around the edges watching the girls butts in the skintight shorts. Ew.
Turning around I start to walk down the pathway to the back entrance of the school grounds. With the school year almost over and the seniors playing all their pranks, I don't think the teachers will be doing their rounds around here. Still, gotta be careful. Gotta conduct the prison escape well.
Halfway down the side of the big rugby field, I notice a creme-coloured shirt and dark green shorts, matching my shirt and dark green skirt, sneak in through the gate and come down the path towards me.
Tall, broad shoulders, blond hair.
It's Eddie James.
"Hey, Kenzie," he greets me as we get closer to each other and stops in front of me.
His blond hair is slightly wet like he just washed, and the herb smell of men shampoo is all around him.
"Hi, Eddie - late?" I ask the most obvious fucking thing. What am I, stupid?
He grins and nods. "Yeah, I just couldn't be bothered with that thing...", he puts a finger to his chin as if thinking very hard, "oh yeah, an alarm."
He grins and I have to laugh at how silly that is. It's not even that funny. He seems so mischievous and at the same time confident. He knows it too.
He also knows he is good-looking, I think in the next moment when he goes through his hair, stretching his arm and looks me straight in the eyes.
I wonder what he sees in my green as opposed to his brown eyes.
"What about you?" he frowns and nods towards the common room behind me. "Are you not doing it?" he asks.
I shrug. "Nah. And I was just gonna go to the diary or something." Is it obvious I don't want to be here?
"Oh, how come?" he asks, still grinning. "Got no one to swop with?" he teases me.
Eddie James is teasing me.
For fuck's sake.
I raise my eyebrows and cross my arms in front of my chest. I hate that I have to look up to him, why I am so short? I look back to the common room with everyone now filing out and getting to class.
"Well, doesn't look like you have anyone either," I tease right back at him and grin. Eyes going wide for only a second, his face falls before a smirk starts playing around his lips and I am afraid of the idea that seems to be forming in his mind.
"Well, get undressed then, Kenzie," he says and I can't control my expression fast enough. I can feel the heat in my cheeks and my eyes going wide.
