It was something he did not plan for.
But it felt right.
Though he had been thinking about popping the question, he had never planned it would happen like this.
-------
"It's beautiful. Do you think it's open?" Tae-Eul's question brought him out of his thoughts. He stopped and took a look at the subject in question. The building stood serene, with its spires standing tall against the moonlit sky.
It was the Grand Church of Corea. It was as grand as its name, without being too ostentatious. Its cinnamon-coloured walls held many generations of history, especially for his family. This place of worship was where his parents had celebrated their love by taking their marriage vows.
Even if his parents were no longer here to see him get married, at least he would honour their beautiful memory by getting married here one day.
It started out as a fleeting thought, but the idea quickly solidified in his mind.
He was going to ask her tonight.
It seemed like an impulsive thing to do, but the more he thought about it the more it felt right.
He had no idea if she would accept him, but it was worth a try. She was adamant on keeping a low-profile with their relationship thus far, preferring to be in the media limelight as little as possible.
He understood why she would want it to be so. After all, dating the King of Corea meant that you would also be surrounded by the relentless scrutiny of the public – and judged for suitability as a possible Queen candidate.
As much as he loved her, he needed to respect her privacy and space.
"Why don't we find out?', he tugged her hand and pulled her onto the path leading towards the church.
As they walked along the path, his heart thumped in his chest nervously. Despite being schooled on royal bearing and undergoing almost every form of tutoring and military training from a young age, not one of them had prepared him on how to propose to the love of his life.
The love of his life.
-------
"-Father."
"Ah, good evening, Father." He would have been still lost in his thoughts had Tae-Eul not greeted the priest. This was not good. He had to stay focused.
"What brings you here, Your Highness?"
When asked like that, his mind suddenly blanked out. Focus, Lee Gon, focus!
Mentally, he berated himself for coming up with such an ill-prepared plan for such an important moment such as this. Well, to be honest, he didn't have one.
Taking a deep breath, he decided to just go for it. It was all or nothing anyway.
Reaching out, he took Tae-Eul's hands in his. "Father, I know that we need a license and all that-"
A brief look of puzzlement crossed her face, her eyes looking at him in question.
"-but could you be a witness?"
"I want to get married here. With you." He gazed at Tae-Eul with all the love in his heart, almost afraid that it would shatter with a refusal.
With bated breath, he waited for her answer.
As the shock wore off from Tae-Eul's face, she uttered the words that made his heart leap with unbridled joy.
"Yes."
"Forever and always."
