the stars you hold

The stars are different here to what they are at home. They seem endless, stretching out across the dark of night, between the mountains tipped with a dusting of snow and the hills lush with trees. They shine with vigour, a furious energy to brighten up the eyes which lay upon them. Here, they whisper, this light is my gift to you.

Namjoon is hesitant in taking it, in accepting the stars adorning a beautiful clear sky. Free of worries and expectations — they exist purely and simply in just their name.

Until they don't anymore. Until they are suddenly swallowed by the darkness and are slipped from people's minds. Forgotten. Namjoon doesn't want to be forgotten.

He lowers his gaze to the dirt below his shoes.

“It's pretty.”

Namjoon starts, his eyes darting to Yoongi who shuffles to stand beside him. The elder gives him a look, shoving his hands into the pockets of his fresh new jacket, his headband still pushing the locks of hair out of his eyes.

“I thought you were asleep,” Namjoon whispers, careful to not wake the rest of the members.

Yoongi limply shrugs and tilts his head up to the sky — Namjoon spots the twinkle of stars filling his gaze.

“It's too pretty of a night to sleep.” All Namjoon does is nod and risks another glance at the sky. Immediately he's captured in the heavens trance, eyes lazily drifting over every star, every constellation. He doesn't want to forget.

“Things feel different here,” Namjoon mumbles, and he feels Yoongi's gaze dipping into his skin. “The air is crisp and the stars are bright and it's just—”

Namjoon turns his head and flashes Yoongi a small smile, soft and delicate.

“It feels like we found something we were missing.” The soft chuckle that slips from Namjoon's lips is more than enough for a smile to quirk onto Yoongi. The younger shakes his head and lets out a sigh.

“You always do know the best things to say, huh.” Yoongi keeps his gaze on him.

“As do you.”

Namjoon shifts and they lock eyes, allowing themselves a moment to breathe in the fresh new air. Take in the soft whispers of wind which kisses their skin, grazing through their hair. A quiet moment all to themselves to catch their breath and hold onto it — the two men who have never strayed from each others side. And they never will.

“It'll be okay, Namjoon.”

Namjoon was hesitant in accepting the light of the stars above him, in fear of them eventually burning themselves into a forgotten void. He didn't want that. He didn't want to lose the stars, so he doesn't dare in ever reaching out to them.

But he forgot.

He forgot about stars in his eyes. The universe which Yoongi carries in every fibre of his being. In his lyrics, in his voice, in his smile, in his eyes. The soft and gentle gaze which silently supports Namjoon in a way he never thought anyone truly could.

Those are stars he will hold onto.

“Nine years.”

Namjoon raises an eyebrow. “Huh?”

“In a few months, it will be nines years since we started living together,” Yoongi says with an aloof shrug — both of them know there's nothing nonchalant about it no matter how Yoongi plays it. “Who would have thought we would have ended up here.”

Here.

Billboards.
Stadiums.
Records.
Numbers.
Army.

Here.

Seokjin. Hoseok. Jimin. Taehyung. Jungkook.

Here, with Yoongi.

“It's been a long nine years,” Namjoon whispers and they both turn their eyes back to the sky. Hands slip out from pockets and fingers gently intertwine.

There's a gentle squeeze from Yoongi. Of support. Of celebration. Of unity.

No one says a word as they settle in silence, gazing at the stars which they aligned in order to be here today. They don't need to say anything for each other to know. For everyone to know.

That it is all worth it to be here, holding dreams and light,

with each other.
