Forgiveness

Can you imagine?

***

Crowley and you appeared back in the bunker to hear grunting and all sorts of things being knocked over. Sam snapped up at your sudden presence and gave you a look that said, help me.

You discovered quickly that Castiel and Gabriel were on the ground in storage, the former on top with his hands around Gabriel's throat, who still was currently inhibited by the Enochian handcuffs. Crowley looked on seeming all too bored with this display of angel on angel violence. The eldest Winchester stared before him as well with his lips pressed together in a thin line. Immediately rushing forward and prying Castiel away, you shouted.

"That's ENOUGH!" Castiel whipped his head around to look at you once you pried his hands away from the archangel's throat. His anger seemed to dissipate immediately in exchange for a face that was absolutely miserable. Gabriel sputtered on the ground as Castiel pulled away from you. He wasn't... rough as he did so. It was more the way a child backs away from someone raising their hand to strike them. He was guarded. His eyes hardened just then as they met yours again and he reached out to tug at your sleeve. You were gone before you knew what was happening.

You dropped into your room a couple inches above your bed, landing with a soft plop. Castiel was on the opposite side of the bed as you turned around, legs dropping off the side and his back to you. You sighed and scooted over to his side, electing to sit there in silence until words managed to come to either of you. You opened your mouth after what seemed like an eternity.

"Castiel, I-"

"I forgive you. And I'm sorry." You snapped your head up in confusion.

"YOU'RE sorry? I'm the one who-"

"I know. You were just doing what you had to."

"But then why did you-"

"I'm apologizing because you clearly value your privacy and I... I read your mind again. Because I just- I don't know. I had to know why. I mean I know we never labeled... whatever this is. Which is... usually something humans do, right? When they want to be... exclusive?" He sounded as though he was trying the word out and it wasn't something he was used to saying in such an emotionally human context. He even squinted as he said it. "I guess I just started to think... maybe you didn't want that as much as I did- I mean, I was so... angry? But not at you. At Gabriel. Because I thought... I don't know what I thought. But I know that thinking about you with him... it hurt. A lot. And I was more sad than angry because I thought I didn't matter to you as much as I wanted to-"

He was starting to ramble. You continued to stare at your feet but you shifted slightly to place a hand over his, effectively shutting him up. You didn't deserve his forgiveness. If it wasn't for your stupid human pride you would have just sucked it up and let Castiel get involved. That way you wouldn't have even had to think about doing what you did with Gabriel. It was unbearable thinking about the doubt and self-loathing you had put Castiel through.

You opened your mouth to speak once more, hesitating for a couple seconds before vocalizing the thought.

"I'm sorry. And I forgive you."

Castiel turned and pulled you into his arms, nesting his head on top of yours and rubbing your back. You sighed into him, breathing in his vessel's scent. This prompted you to wonder to yourself if his physical form was in any way connected to his celestial form regarding things such as fragrance. Was it him that smelled like heaven? Or had it been Jimmy Novak that had you so intoxicated with his aroma? You mentally shook the thought away and your brain continued down a train of increasingly nonsensical thoughts as his body's heartbeat lulled you near sleep. You opened your mouth once more. Sucked in a breath. You mindlessly murmured into his chest as your eyes began to close.

"I love you."

You felt him bristle. You froze, and your eyes widened with horror.

Oh God, you thought. Too soon. Way, WAY too soon-

"I love you too." You put breathing on pause for several seconds before relaxing again. He slowly leaned you two back onto the bed, your bodies flush as you held each other close. You passed out and woke up the next morning, still in his arms and nestled into his chest.

He smiled down at you once he noticed you were awake and turned you over so that he was on top, placing a gentle kiss to your forehead, then moving down to hover above your lips, as if waiting for permission. You grinned and lifted your chin a little in encouragement. With one hand around your waist and the other arm now draped above your head, his mouth captured yours in a sweet kiss, gently pulling at your bottom lip. You sighed happily. You never wanted this moment to end.

And then Crowley waltzed through the door.

You and Cas broke apart immediately.

"We really need to lock that thing."

"Like that would stop him." Castiel rolled his eyes, and shifted off of you.

"Y/N, love! You wouldn't have happened to invite a demon into the archives, would you?" Crowley queried. You exchanged baffled looks with Castiel as you sat up quickly.

"Why would I do that?"

"Because there's one looking for you. He tried passing himself off as a human. Said his name was... Mason?"

Okay. Now you were listening. You hopped off the bed, brow furrowed and turning away from Crowley's disinterested stare as you ran out the door.
