"Okay, Miss Bloom, we are all set to take you up to get your X-ray's. I just have a few questions before I take you up there. How are you feeling?" The doctor asks, smiling sweetly as she places a hand on my swollen knee.
I laugh holding up my splinted wrist. "This is the last thing I needed." The laughter quickly turns to tears.
"I understand. Breaking a bone is very painful." The doctor sympathizes
"Yeah."
"Okay now for the questions. Any chance you are pregnant?" She asks.
"God no!" I laugh at the thought. "My fiancé and I have not had sex in months." I look up at the doctor. "TMI, Sorry."
"That's quite alright. Uh, okay so what was the last day of your last period?"
I think for a second, trying to recall it. "I think October 16th."
"You sure?" She asks.
"Yes."
"Are your periods usually irregular?" She continues, writing for my answers.
"Uh no, they are actually pretty regular."
"Uh huh. And you said you are definitely not pregnant then?"
I shake my head. Darren won't even look at me. To think he would want to knock me up would be absolutely crazy.
"Miss Bloom, it is December 12th. Almost exactly two months from when you said your last period was." The doctor shows me a calendar on the back of her clipboard. "Are you sure the last time was in October?"
I pull my phone up to my face, looking at the date that stares me down.
December 12th, 2020
I laugh. "Oh wow. Is it December already?" I shake my head. "I guess that explains all of the ice and snow outside. The ice is what landed me here with this." The terrible situation somehow keeps me laughing. "I am incredibly stressed right now. My whole life seems to keep falling apart around me. A-and I am planning a wedding. And-" I try to justify the late period. "It is probably just late because of stress."
"Let's take you to get some bloodwork just to be sure." She smiles and taps on the keyboard in the corner.
I shake my head. "Just get me an X-ray and then get me out of here. Please."
"I understand you are in a great deal of pain from your wrist but it would be irresponsible of me to risk hurting the fetus with the X-rays if there is one. So I will just order the blood-"
"There is no fetus!" I interrupt her. "I am not pregnant! There is no chance." I shake my head, denying the possibility. It is not possible.
The doctor sighs, turning back to me. "Okay, I am going to step out and order the bloodwork. I will send your fiancé back in to help you calm down in the meantime. I will be back." She walks towards the door.
"No! No please do not send him in!" I beg. "Please."
The doctor sighs. "Are you in danger?"
I shake my head. "He- he just can't know I might be pregnant. Please."
She nods. "Alrighty then. I'll be back when We are ready for your bloodwork. Please try to calm down in the meantime."
"I will. I will. Thank you."
