They let her fall to the ground and shatter like a vase full of flowers. She was left alone to pick up the pieces. Now they are back and she's afraid of being broken again.
I enter my father's building and wait for the elevator, texting him and anxiously waiting for his reply. I step into the empty elevator and press the button that will bring me to his floor. The doors close, locking me in the giant metal box as it rises.
I wonder what this emergency is. It didn't sound too urgent based on my father's voice but his words suggested it was.
I know it definitely isn't a fire. There is no smoke and not a single fire truck was parked outside. They wouldn't let me in the building if there was a fire. And they definitely wouldn't let me in the elevator!
The only other emergency I can think of would be a break in. If that is what is going on, I will be putting myself directly in the line of fire when those metal doors open.
But that can't be true. My dad asked me to come up to his floor. He wouldn't have done that if it was dangerous up there. I quickly rule that out of my theories. I guess I will just have to wait until I see him to see exactly what this emergency is.
The elevator stops. I take a deep breath before they open. I have absolutely no idea what is behind these doors. It could be anything.
The heavy doors open and reveal the office floor. I shake my head and exit the elevator. A large crowd of girls blocks me from going any further into the room.
What is going on?
I look around me, attempting to find a path around them. There must be an event up here or something today. Why else would these people be here?
There seems to be no way around them. I am going to have to go through them.
I begin shoving myself through these teenage girls swarming the floor. Pushing through them is a lot harder than it looks. They don't seem to care that I am an adult. They all want whatever they are pushing towards and won't stop at anything until they get it apparently.
These girls are scarily strong. I wasn't expecting this kind of resistance from teenagers. Why are they all in an office building anyways? I still don't understand. Isn't it a school day? Shouldn't they be in math class or something? The further into the crowd that I get, the more they push back and the more confused I get as to what is going on here.
"Dad?" I call out. Maybe he is somewhere in this crowd of girls. Maybe they are trampling him and that is why he called. Who knows. I know I certainly don't. "Dad?!" I call out again. I didn't hear a response the first time. Maybe he can't hear me over the energy buzzing through the air?
I give up on trying to get his attention. I don't even know if he is still here. I could be calling out for him forever if he isn't here to hear me. It is just a waste of my time at this point. I just need to get to the front of this crowd so I can see what is going on.
Miraculously, I push my way to the front, right into a security barricade. They are trying to keep the girls away from something. "Please let me through. I need to see my dad." I beg the security guards.
"That's what they all say." One man replies to me as he tries to keep me back.
"What?" I ask. What is he even talking about. All these people are here to see my dad?
"Let her through. That's my daughter. I called her." My dad saves me from being stuck in this outrageous crowd. I make eye contact with him as the guards let me through and try to keep anyone else from slipping through. Who are these guys anyway?
I run to my dad, throwing my arms around him for a hug. I am glad he is safe. "What's wrong?" I ask him. "What is the emergency?"
"Look." My Dad points. I turn around to see what he is talking about.
I see three very familiar looking boys huddle in a corner talking to a man my dad works with. I can't quite place where I know them from, but I know I know them somehow.
One of the boys turns around, locking his eyes with mine. A spark ignites inside me. Is it anger? Love? Lust? All of the above? I am not sure.
