Chapter 13: Take A Stand

"A-A spy?!" Kaito's voice trembled with shock as he stared wildly at Maki, despite how frighteningly calm she seemed.

"Yeah, pretty much," she clarified, "I can't ask Hope's Peak to help me with this without having eyes and ears on the inside, if you get what I mean."

He understood perfectly well what she meant, but that didn't make processing it all any easier. Honestly, it shouldn't have surprised him as much as it had. He already knew that she was an assassin, but even so, he couldn't help worrying about her. Every time she left to meet with those horrible people, she was just putting herself in more and more danger. 

After a quick attempt at calming himself, he let out a long breath and replied, "Yeah, I gotcha." he cast a small smile toward the carpeted floor, "I'm really glad ya' told me. 'Make's me feel special, knowin' you're cool with tellin' me these things."

A small hint of red danced across her face as Maki's cheeks puffed and she responded, "You're my boyfriend, you idiot. Of course, I'd tell you." A twinkle of joy gleamed in his violet eyes.

"Heh, yeah," Kaito laughed and scratched the back of his head as a bashful red made its way to his cheeks as well. She didn't often flat-out call him her boyfriend, but when she did, it just reminded him of how grateful he was to have her with him.

Her small smile faded into a determined expression as she cast a gaze toward the door to the headmaster's office, "I'm going to go in now; you can head back to the dorms if you want."

He shook his head and crossed his arms, "Nah, I'll wait for ya'."

"Stubborn," she shot.

"But of course!" he announced in an exaggerated accent, forcing a small giggle out of her. She slowly stepped toward the door before her, then turned slightly and cast him a soft gaze.

Maki waved Kaito a quick goodbye before placing her hand on the doorknob and stepping into the headmaster's office.

Sitting in the fancy velvet chair at the large desk near the back of the room was the headmaster, who seemed to be concentrating on a stack of files before him. For the man in charge of a school brimming with talented high schoolers hand-picked from across the country, his appearance was relatively average. The same could be said of his office, which was decorated with typical bookshelves, furniture, vast assortments of files and papers, and a large wooden desk. It even carried with it a faint scent similar to that of a library. As she scanned the area, she deduced that he hadn't even noticed her yet.

Maki closed the door behind her softly, then gave it two curt knocks to get his attention. Slowly, the man lifted his head from the collection of files he was working on.

"Can I help you?" he asked in an earnest tone. One of the better aspects of Hope's Peak was the headmaster, and how he genuinely gave his all to aid his students with their problems.

"Yes, this is Maki." she addressed formally, "I'm here to re-visit what we discussed last week."
