Midoriya sat awkwardly in the hallway holding his dozens of hero notebooks and gadgets he'd managed to throw together.
He still wasn't much of a mechanic by any sense but he wasn't here for any of that anyway.
He just needed to know enough to get in.
Needed to know enough to build the one thing he's here for.
The only true way to get the revenge he wants.
Though, he's very far from building something of that caliber yet.
Both in technical skill and in the trust of the people around him.
But he's ready to put in the time and effort for it. Hell, that's what he's been doing ever since that encounter with All Might.
The very thought made him dig his nails into his arms. He paused and took a breath, loosening his grip and checking the clock on the wall.
His Support Course practical exam/interview was in ten minutes.
He knew he did well on the written exam portion. Whatever time he wasn't spending learning the basics of mechanical engineering and gadget design, he was spending researching anything he could to help. He only got a few hours of sleep every day and had developed some dark circles around his eyes but that's only a testament to his dedication.
He could feel rumbling and explosions from the Hero Course practical exams happening elsewhere on the grounds.
Bakugou was out there.
Doing what he and Midoriya had always dreamed of doing.
Again, with the nails in his arm. He forced another breath and tried to point his focus towards his gathered materials.
The notebooks were mostly for the interview part. To show the potential he had through his thoroughness and analysis skills of various quirks, quirk users, and support items.
He'd even made extra sketches and notes from calling up various support item agencies to get pointers. Of course, not many wanted to give out so-called "trade secrets" but a few gave him some good solid advice.
That was another reason he wanted to get into UA. He'd have the connections. He'd have the facilities and tools.
The problem was that he'd still have to make good quality items. Stuff that actually works and helps the students. He didn't look forward to that part. Since the encounter with All Might, he's mostly been holed up in his room. Every time he saw a hero recruitment poster or piece of merchandise, his stomach turned. It disgusted him now.
He hated it all.
He even threw away all his old merch. Practically tore his room down to the nails. And practically had to purchase replacements for nearly everything.
It just hurt too much to see hero-related stuff.
But it didn't make him sad and pathetic anymore.
It made him mad.
Pissed off, even.
That the world was so goddamn unfair giving such an advantage to only a chosen few. When some of those blessed didn't even deserve it.
When some of the blessed use that blessing to belittle others and tell them to take a swan dive off a roof.
Fuck, there's the nails again.
He looked up at the clock.
Four minutes.
He glanced down at his gadgets. Several poorly crafted tools with shoddy wiring and a whole lot of electrical tape holding it all together.
They worked though.
One was a pair of gauntlet-like gloves that when moved a certain direction snaps handcuffs on someone else. Another was a pair of glasses fitted with a heat sensor in one of the lens to help find people in a debris pile or dark disaster situation. Ya know, simple stuff like that. And all made from rudimentary stuff he could either find around the house or buy cheaply at local hardware stores.
None of it was all that impressive, especially compared to some of the gadgets he'd seen other people bring but he hopes it's just enough.
Plus, he's scripted himself a whole sob story about wishing to be a hero, finding out he was quirkless, and then wanting to instead work as hard as he could to help heroes save people.
Honestly, it took a few times to just not gag at the thing, but he's got it down pat now.
He's even practiced a part where he gets choked up. That should really help sell it. After all, in practicing his speech and fake-crying, it's been the only time he's even been able to cry lately.
Yeah, he spend most of his days after his encounter sobbing into his pillow day in and day out but that was a while ago.
Now, he just felt...empty.
Except for all that hero hatred of course.
Which, still felt like a pretty empty emotion but it was all he felt.
Everything else was fake.
Rehearsed.
Like this nervous smile he plastered on his face when he hears the door open and the judges usher him into the testing room.
Guess it's showtime.

It's been a few weeks since then.
Midoriya can't say he's not nervous every time he hears the mail come.
Especially when he hears his mother call for him because there's an envelope with his name on it. He takes his headphones off and trudged in.
His heart skipped a beat when he saw the wax seal.
It's from UA.
This is it.
He scrambles back to his room and closes the door before ripping open the envelope. A strange little disc pops out and lands on the floor where it then projects an image into the air.
He stares at it in anticipation.
"Congratulations!"
He sinks to his knees.
He did it.
He's going to go to UA.
Tears welled up in his eyes.
Huh, been a while since that happened genuinely.
He coughed as he began sobbing.
"YES!" He screamed, throwing a fist in the air.
The thrill of accomplishing what he wanted warmed his chest.
Another feeling followed, though.
A sort of sordid, conniving, spiteful feeling.
He did what Kacchan said he couldn't.
And now Midoriya is one step closer to getting what he wants.
