It'd been a month and a half since starting at UA.
Midoriya tended to keep to himself, honestly just overwhelmed with a sense of frustration whenever he heard his classmates discuss their favorite heroes and plans to help them in the future.
He knew he'd have to deal with that upon entering a literal hero school but it still stung sometimes.
He'd become a member of an online community that focused heavily on the corruption Hero Society had taken. He didn't sleep much considering all there was to read. Lots of incriminating leaked documents from the Commission or interesting conspiracy theories occupied his mind and sowed an even further doubt in heroes.
Maybe even hatred.
He wasn't quite sure yet.
And he wasn't quite sure what exactly he wanted to accomplish by being here.
Yeah, he's getting a good inside look and wants to look into a few theories or scandals involving UA but he needed something more concrete.
He tapped his pencil against his notebook as he thought.
Until the teacher arrived and grabbed his attention.
"Today we're actually going to take apart some beta-stage support items in development for classes 1-A and 1-B." Power Loader announced, setting a heavy box down at one of the work tables and stepping away to grab a few more.
Midoriya eyed the contents from afar.
All the items were unpainted so it all seemed to blend into one sea of grey metal.
Until a pair of large oblong objects caught his attention.
"Come on up and pick an item or two--" Power Loader began, getting cut off by Midoriya darting to the front and quickly grabbing the two oblong items, "Er-I'd like you to turn in detailed sketches and descriptions of the parts and be able to take it apart and put it together by the end of next week." He finished explaining. A few other students moved to pick out items, "Oh, and here I have a document for each one about the student it's for as well as their original request." He added, pulling out a stack of paper from the bottom of one of the boxes.
Midoriya set the items on his work table and just stared at them for a moment.
He didn't need any sort of paper telling him who this was for.
He remembers when this person came up with the idea.
Hell, he even helped.
And here they are in real life.
Bakugou Katsuki's gauntlets.
On one hand, Midoriya wanted to kick and scream out in anger that Bakugou, the guy who belittled and bullied Midoriya for a decade, got to have his dreams come to life at UA.
On the other hand, the little bit of hopeful innocence left inside him got excited. After all, this truly was their wildest imagination come to life.
And this could also help solidify what Midoriya came here to do.
Power loader passed out the several page documents to each student about whatever gear they picked out, as well as distributing any small leftover stuff so they have more than just one item to inspect.
The packet didn't even touch Midoriya's work bench before he swiped it up to read through.
His mind raced with ideas as he stared down at a copy of Kacchan's original proposal. Midoriya had to hand it to his former friend; the guy sure could draw well. His parents are fashion designers after all, it just made sense.
Midoriya's eyes landed on a little description next to a detailed close-up sketch of the gauntlet.
"...stores up sweat...pull the pin........it explodes like a real grenade...." The writing said, though Midoriya was just skimming to get a general idea.
A mischievous giggle escaped Midoriya's lips and he quickly slapped a hand over his mouth.
"I know! It's so exciting!" Came a voice from the table beside him. He turned to see Hatsume pushing her goggles up to the top of her head. Her work bench was littered with mechanical parts, some of them even giving off streams of smoke.
Midoriya blushed, scared his classmate would see right through him and realize that he came to UA with less than heroic intentions.
She just grinned though, scooting her stool over excitedly.
"You're lucky you're fast! I had my eyes on that beautiful baby too." She said, reaching over and gently running her hand down the long lever part of the grenade.
"O-oh, yeah, it just looked really cool." Midoriya stammered, not wanting to explain that he was going after the gear because it belonged to his elementary and middle school bully. He didn't want anyone to make a connection of him to Bakugou.
And also he was a little caught off guard considering he's been spending less and less time interacting with other people. Even with his mom over dinner. Lately, he's just grabbed his dinner and retreated to his room to watch youtube. Besides, all she ever wanted to talk about was how he got into UA and how proud she is of him for finding a way to pursue his dream of being a hero while being quirkless.
That, or ask questions about his sleep schedule since she hears his videos at odd hours of the night. Or point out the darkening circles around his eyes. Or the fact that he never goes outside. Or wonder why he wanted to pack all his All Might merch away to donate. Or why he didn't hang out with his friends anymore like Katsuki--
That last one was the last straw.
Why couldn't she see?
Why couldn't anyone see?
Why did they ignore all his bruises?
Why didn't they notice the way his cowered whenever Kacchan raised his voice?
Why didn't they notice how Midoriya struggled to find partners for group projects?
He didn't have friends.
So why didn't anyone notice?
Well they didn't want to, obviously.
Kacchan was the king of the school. He got the best grades, he had the coolest quirk, he was the best in whatever sport they played in PE.
And Midoriya was just some awkward quirkless kid delusional enough to believe he could be a hero some day.
He wasn't worth the time of day.
Hero society just wants powerful, flashy people who look good as action figures. It was all for show.
Even All Might was a complete lie.
He wasn't the big, great man who was invincible with a smile always on his face.
He was a scrawny, weak husk of a person who basically told Midoriya to give up.
Midoriya's hands clenched onto the packet, wrinkling several of the sheets.
He hated All Might.
He hated heroes.
He hated Kacchan.
They didn't deserve to be blessed with quirks and be able to reach their dreams.
They deserve to have everything they worked for fall to pieces as they watch.
They deserve to feel the same sort of pain Midoriya has had to feel his whole life.
And he's going to see to it that one specific person gets the worst of it.
