The following morning was exciting for first years. They would get their class routines, meet their professors, discover the endless grounds of Hogwarts and whatnot.
James and Sirius woke up and dashed to the great hall for breakfast. They realized they were late because it seemed most people were clearing out now. Quickly taking a seat the two boys grabbed some buttered toast and started talking.
"So what d'you reckon we'll be taught in classes?" asked James.
"Dunno, but I look forward to McGonagall's classes. She looks like she can take a joke and boy do I have a few up my sleeve," said Sirius, earning a grin from James.
They ate up and were running to classes when they collided with an extremely annoyed looking Professor McGonagall.
"What is this preposterous behavior?"
James couldn't help but smile thinking Sirius seemed to be quite wrong to assume about her being able to take a joke.
"Is there something funny? Have I told you an absolutely hilarious joke?" demanded McGonagall in an irritated tone.
James shook his head vigorously.
"Get to class this instant. I believe first year Gryffindors have Charms."
James and Sirius nodded and got out of her way.
Charms was taken by Professor Flitwick. Wonderful man really. James and Sirius did well in their first lesson with the Levitation charm as their task.
The day wore on and so did the first week and almost every first year had settled in well, made friends and sorted out their studies.
"Hey James!"
"What's up Sirius?"
"I've been thinking."
"That must be new for you."
Sirius hit James on the head with his potions book.
"Woah sorry. So what did your beautiful mind come up with?"
"A trick."
"A trick you say? I'm listening, go on."
"You know young Snivellus is being quite a git these past few days."
"Really? Didn't notice, what did he do?"
"It's really just him existing, my head hurts every time I look at him. He's quite a pain."
James snorted at Sirius's words.
"What did you have in mind?"
"Say we give his hair a nice makeover. He practically leaves a trail of grease wherever he goes. So I say we get Peeves to help us out. When Snivellus is going to come out of the Slytherin common room I'll tell Peeves to be there waiting and when he does come out he'll drop a nice bucket of icy water to cool him down. It's quite hot in September don't you think? And don't worry that's not all. We'll make the water loaded with soap on him too."
James chuckled.
"Sounds good to me."
"That's because you've got brains my boy."
"Why thank you."
"Now come on let's get to the Great Hall. We'll talk about it a bit more over lunch."
James nodded and they headed out.
James and Sirius entered the hall to see few people there already. James eyes drifted around the room to a certain red head as fought down a blush forming on his cheeks.
"Evans eh?" said Sirius with a smirk.
"W-what? No of course not," said James hurriedly.
"Yeah yeah."
"I'm serious," said James as he realized what he had said and gave out a chuckle. He knew what Sirius was going to say.
"No you're not. I'm Sirius and you are James," said Sirius, pointing toward himself then James.
James rolled his eyes but he couldn't help but enjoy this pun even though it was mentioned way too often.
They took a seat and started discussing their plans.
"You're going to use soap water? Honestly-" said a boy.
"Why what's wrong with that?" asked James indignantly.
"You're a wizard for Godric's sake. Use scourgify," he said in a matter-of-factly tone.
"Well who might you be young lad?" said Sirius with appreciation in his expression.
"Remus Lupin. Oh and this is Peter," he said pointing to a round boy beside him. He looked like he had been petrified.
"Sirius Black," he replied.
"Hey, I'm James Potter."
Remus nodded.
"So what are you going to clean with soap water?" asked Peter meekly as though if he spoke up he might die.
Sirius let out a snort.
"A very greasy mind."
Remus and Peter both raised an eyebrow when James and Sirius started to explain their plan.
Remus couldn't help but smile when he quickly shook his head and said, "That seems a bit mean doesn't it?"
"Not at all," said Sirius and James in unison.
Remus shrugged.
"Well thanks for the advice on scourgify. Would you like to um-" said Sirius.
"Come along with us?" completed James.
"Um yeah sure," said Remus.
Peter scurried behind them as they left the Great Hall. They all had a good feeling about this quartet.
