Tokyo was dark at this time of day. Dim, vast clouds of shadows engulfing Japan's capital whirled across the starless sky, sometimes allowing the faint light of the moon to peek through the thick curtains of icy crystals. A taxi pulled through the crowded roads of Shinjuku, surrounded by enormous buildings. Neon lit skyscrapers were attentively organized across the horizon, colorful lights elucidating the dark shadows that the night clouds had brought upon the city.

Eyes huge in amazement, the young figure stuck her head out of the window, enchanted by the sight. "Put your head back Hinami! You'll get hurt."

"But I've never been to Shinjuku! It's only fair that I get a good look," the young girl protested but backed down as the only response she had gotten from her mother was a serious glare. As much as the woman was nice most of the time, Hinami knew that disrespecting or teasing her mother too much wasn't all that smart. While the city had been amazing, what she was even more excited about was seeing her father in the 20th ward. "I promise we'll go see one of their infamous neon light shows one day, okay?"

"Thanks, mama!"

The duo safely arrived at Asaki Fueguchi's clinic, greeting the man with the biggest smiles he had ever seen. "Papa!"

"Hey, darling," a genuine smile replaced his stressed frown, pulling the small child into a warm embrace. "How was your trip to Okayama?" Little Hinami smiled, hopping on her father's lap. "It was amazing! I learned so much! We should go together one day! Oh, and mom also promised we'd go see the neon light show in Shinjuku."

"Is that so?" he asked, eyes locking with his wife's, a small smile appearing on both of their lips.

"Mhmm!"

"Then we'll have to make sure to plan a trip to Shinjuku soon."

"Yay!"

"By the way are you hungry, darling? Help yourself to some food in the fridge."

"Okay! I'll be right back when I finish up!" she laughed, running to the kitchen with a huge smile on the face. She washed her hands, drying them off with a kitchen towel, and then opened the fridge. Her irises suddenly turned red, the sclera pitch black as her mouth watered at the bloody steak. The sweet aroma of the human meat was absolutely alluring, and she couldn't help but squeal in excitement. After microwaving it for a few minutes, she dug in happily, finally satisfying her hunger.

"How is the situation, dear?" Ryouko asked, hand resting on her husband's shoulder. The man sighed, gaze turning to one of the drawings his daughter had made for him not so long ago.

"Complicated."

It was dangerous to walk alone, especially when it got dark in Tokyo. And if you were a human, walking alone in the dark was particularly risky. Nighttime was the so-called 'ghouls' feeding hour', the time when mankind's most feared predators; ghouls, began hunting. They were portrayed as murderous monsters, feeding solely on human flesh. And the easiest time to feed was of course during nighttime when they were shielded by the darkness.

[Name] [Last Name] knew that very well, and yet, she chose to ignore the risks of getting killed by a ghoul. Contrary to what others believed, Tokyo was the most beautiful at night time. If she chose to live her life in fear like most of the residents, she'd be throwing away the chance to see such an amazing sight every night. As she had moved from a small village in western Japan, the opportunity to study at an elite university in Tokyo finally presented itself at the end of her senior year in high school, when she had received the mail from the Kamii University, offering her a full-ride scholarship. Her dream finally came true. She wasn't going to waste the short life she had hiding in the comfort of her apartment.
