A month after Dean moved back into our room..
It's been almost two months of not remembering Sam or Dean. I woke up today and Dean was out of bed, which is rare since he moved back in here with me. So I climbed out of bed and walked toward the kitchen.
"... your birthday, Sammy. It's the least I could do."
I froze to hear Dean saying something about Sam's birthday. Shit, was that today? Soon? How don't I know when it is? I'm an awful best friend.
I went around the corner, "It's your birthday?" His face fell. "Uh.. yeah, it is."
My lip quivered as emotion hit me like a hurricane. He tried to smile at me, "But it's okay. Birthdays aren't our thing. It's not a big deal." The tears started and there was no stopping them.
Dean rushed to me, "Hey, hey, hey. Baby, don't do that."
"I hate this! I forgot my best friend's birthday! This sucks!"
Sam moved closer as well, "Nat, it isn't your fault. And I swear it isn't a big deal at all. We aren't big on birthdays around here. I'm actually headed out on a hunt for Rowena. Do you want to come?"
I pulled from Dean, "I don't think so. Maybe the next one?"
"Of course, shorty. But hopefully this will be the last time we go looking for her, it's a pretty strong lead." He said happily.
I half smiled up at him, "Happy birthday, Sam." I added softly.
He came closer to hug me, then he kissed my head, "Thanks, Nat."
I went 'for a drive' alone when Dean said he was staying here with me. I was really going buy Sam a birthday present. It would be late, but nobody thought to remind me about Sam's birthday.
After driving to a strip mall, I parked and went to the first store. It was more of a girly store, so I went to the next one.
An hour later I was aimlessly walking around yet another store when I realized I had no idea what to get Sam as a present. Seven years of friendship and I couldn't even pick out a damn birthday gift.
I went back to the bunker and stormed to out bedroom, slamming the door before crawling in bed. This was one of my worst days so far.
Dean came in after a minute, "Hey, what's wrong my sweet girl?"
I huffed, wiping the tears off my face. "I am so frustrated! Sam is my best friend in the world, and first I forget his birthday... now I can't even pick him out a birthday present because I'm broken!"
He rubbed my back, "I'm so sorry, baby. I wish I could fix this for you. I hate seeing you this upset." He spoke softly.
He tried his best to comfort me, but eventually gave me some space; assuring me he was here if I needed him. I think he could tell these last couple months have been hell on me; and I'm sure it has been on him too. Seeking answers to get my memories back has taken it's toll on me.
I was definitely in a funk now. I haven't felt this broken since that first night I really realized what was missing from my brain.
As I scrolled through movies that night, wrapped up in my favorite blanket, Dean appeared at the door with plates in hand. I smelled the pasta and garlic bread before I saw it.
