Chapter 10: Andrew
Crap. I need to start thinking things through. As I run, the air feels like it lacks oxygen.I’ve already tried teleporting out of this mess but I’m too weak to do it correctly. I continue to run but the sirens are directly behind me. God, Manhattan cops are the real deal. I know I could keep on running for another mile or so before they catch up…if I don't pass out before then. Maia, I need you to pick me up… I say in my head, hoping that she will hear me.
What the hell! Her voice screams. Oh it’s just you. Don’t do that. I almost peed myself.
Glad to hear you bladder functions are working. Are you on 5th avenue?
Yeah…how did you know that? She says, sounding a bit freaked out.
I could feel your… closeness. Okay that sounded creepy but it’s true. How fast can you get to 5th and 56th? I ask urgently as I hear the sirens getting closer. I seriously hope they don’t catch me or else I’m going to need to find a way to explain why I can run faster than a car.
Five minutes. But why?
I need a ride. I’ll explain later. I say and then mentally check out of the telepathic conversation. I can feel my eye throbbing and I mentally curse at myself for drinking those beers. My abilities don't work as well when I have alcohol in my body. I don’t know exactly why because I am not a doctor nor will I ever be one. The trip over something and fall. A wave of pain drives through my ankle and at this moment I feel like staying on the ground and giving up but I don’t. I use my hands to lift myself up and continue running. The police car’s head lights light the dark back alley I am currently running though. It’s dark outside but it’s not too late. Probably only nine. Damn. I still can’t believe I’m being chased by cops and it’s not even midnight. There goes my reputation.
As we get closer to 56th street, I turn out of the alley way and the car behind me screeches to a stop. I don’t need to turn around to know that the two cops have gotten out of their car and are now following me on step. I make it out to the main street of 5th and have to slow down into a normal run. I can’t let this many people who are out on a friday night see my speed ability.
Here! Maia’s voice shouts in my head. I look around the cars but can’t find her.
What color?
Red. She says and I immediately spot her in a red and black Camero. Leave it to her to come pick me up in a shiny red sports car. Freaking rich kids.
I quickly open the door and jump into her car, almost slamming the door on right foot. “Wait, are you being chased by the police? Andrew we can both go to prison!” She panics.
“If you drive then it will reduce our chances. Now go!” She hits the gas and zooms through the busy street. I look through the rear window and see the two police men running after Maia’s car. A vivid image of a yellow taxi fills my head and I squeeze my eyes tightly, sending the image to the two police officers. In seconds they stop chasing after the car we are in and begin to look around the streets, confused. Placing images in peoples heads is just a perk of being a telepath. It’s extremely hard to do if you haven't touched the person or created a special bond with them but it is still possible or else the cops would still be on our tail. But I’m still surprised I was able to do so considering I’ve got alcohol in my veins and I feel like I’m going to pass out any second.
“You look nice.” I say to Maia casually. Her hair is down as usual and she wears a pair of denim jeans, a sweatshirt and a pair of tan boots. She turns her head towards me in rage and narrows her eyes.
