"Alright, guys you're going to partner up on this project. It's going to be on the power and complexities of the human memory. Also... you're not picking your partners this time."

He immediately earns loud grumbles from the class.

Ignoring us, he continues.

"You and your partner can present it however you want but you have to fill out this sheet that will help you organize your info along with..."

I sneak a glance at Arden. Her hair is tied into a neat ponytail, showing off her regal cheek bones. She's wearing a mocha colored sweater. She looks really nice today.

I shift my eyes away again and attempt to pay attention to what Mr. Jansen's saying. He's done talking now though and is holding a small, clear jar.

"There's 11 names in here so, half the class. So, not everyone will pick out the jar, okay?"

We nod at the unneeded explanation. Mr. Jansen tends to over explain things.

"Okay, Lin, you're up. Come pick a name."

As she gets up, everyone quiets down.

She sticks her hand in the jar and moves it around for a bit before finally grabbing one. She squints down at the paper and I watch as a smirk replaces her bored expression.

She must have gotten Matteo because as she walks back to her seat she pats his shoulder.

"Next up is... Arden."

She stands and makes her way to the front. She dips her hand in, not putting much thought into it and pulls one out in a matter of 2 seconds.

She looks down at the piece of paper but her expression is unreadable.

I wonder who she got...

I don't pay much attention as everyone else picks. All I can think about is the new "babysitter " that's suppose to be here tomorrow night. I don't understand why my mom is so bent on getting a babysitter. God, what does she think is going to happen? I can take care of my brothers for a week. The thing is, I know she wouldn't do this if she and dad were together. I used to watch  Miles and Matt all the time before.

Why do you care so much? It's just a babysitter.

Because that means she doesn't trust me.

No, it doesn't.

Yes, it does. She doesn't trust anyone anymore.

You're not like your dad.

I know!

Do you?

Tears sting my eyes but they don't fall. But just in case, I bury my face in my arms as I lean forward on my desk. I was getting a bit drowsy but before I could fall asleep, I feel a soft tap on my shoulder.

My head pops up.

Arden looks down at me cautiously.

The scowl on my face fades immediately.

"Uh. Hey... partner," she says with a sheepish smile.
