I tell you these things in confidence it won't affect the love you hold for me. Even if it was during a fight, I thought you would finally understand. Instead I have to keep pretending just to keep you from locking me up in my own room. I still have to keep pretending, have to say it's all a 'phase'. And I can't help but hate you for it. I guess I just thought that my own mother would love me no matter what. I was wrong.

Izumi slowly opened the door to her house and closed it behind her as quietly as possible, before turning around on the tips of her feet. She promptly froze as she was met with her mother's glowering face. The woman's arms were crossed tightly, lips pursed and spine rigid. She impatiently tapped her foot on the wooden floor and cocked her eyebrow at the uniform Izumi was wearing, sharply inclining her head toward it.
"Do you want to tell me why you're wearing the boy's uniform, Izumi?" Izumi's eyes shot down to her clothes, the pants she was wearing the only difference in the uniforms. She nervously bounced on her feet, mind racing.
"U- uhm, well, I thought shirts were kind of universal, but if you think I should just wear a bra-" Izumi stuttered out, promptly shutting up as her mother's face only got madder.
"I am not amused, young lady." Izumi slightly flinched at 'young lady'. "What do you think you're doing, wearing such inappropriate clothing? Why in the world are you wearing pants?" Izumi looked to the floor, backing up a bit. She tugged at the black shirt she wore and scratched at her wrists.
"I- I just wanted to wear pants today..." Izumi muttered as her eyes darted around frantically, searching for an escape. Inko angrily huffed. "I- I'm uh, just gonna go to my room.... and change...." Inko held up a hand, scowling.
"No, no. We're going to finish this talk. Why do you think you wanting to wear pants is a good excuse for disregarding the dress code and dressing inappropriately?" Izumi frowned, muttering something under her breath. Inko sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose, closing her eyes shut. "Speak up. I can't understand you when you mutter."
"It- it's not against the dress code for girls to wear pants...." Izumi winced as she prepared for the impact of her statement. And have an impact it did. Inko indignantly gasped and threw her hands up, her voice almost a yell.
"Oh, well then that's all okay then! The dress code is okay with it, so let's just ignore our mother, and how she has blatantly said we are not allowed to wear such absurd clothing! Makes sense, does it not?" Izumi shrank back, tears beginning to prick at her eyes. "Why did you think this was a good idea?"
"I- I just... I couldn't... I couldn't wear the skirt...." Inko sighed as she massaged her temples.
"And why is that, hmm? Go on, I'd love to hear whatever excuse you've come up with this time." Inko quipped, her voice ice cold. Izumi swallowed back a fresh batch of stutters.
Whatever excuse. But it wasn't an excuse. "I- I just- I couldn't wear it. I'm sorry, I.... I've got no excuse, I guess." Izumi tried to force the words that tried to jump out of her mouth back down, feeling an acidic taste form in her mouth. But it was true. She honestly couldn't wear the damned skirt. She had certainly tried, but there was just something wrong with her today. The clothing was too suffocating, or perhaps it wasn't suffocating enough, the feeling of something wrapped around her, hugging her legs, simply gone. Or maybe it was the memories that always seemed to accompany the flowy clothing.
