"Ask him what's with the vampire fangs" "Ask him to start from the beginning, like why he said he fell from the sky" and @kilarthmac on Instagram

The moment I asked Halifax about his noticeably sharp teeth, he got defensive. "Look, I have really sharp canines, okay? It's not a big deal."

I gave him a pointed look, and he returned it, clearly indicating that any more inquiries on that front weren't going to accomplish much. Deciding to work with what I already knew, I tried another line of questioning.

"You said... you fell from the sky. Uh, how?"

He shrugged. "How does anyone? I was flying, of course."

Okay, I thought. This guy is definitely high. "What do you mean, flying?"

"Don't roll your eyes! I was flying with my sister in our father's machine."

"Your... father's machine?" I said, bewildered. Whatever trip this guy was on, it must've hit hard.

"Yes. Not like those dirigibles and blimps, something much more elegant than that. It had wings... and a far superior engine."

"You mean like a plane?"

"What's a plane?" Halifax asked, furrowing his brow. After a second, his confusion lessened somewhat. "Oh... airplane... I remember those. But how? There aren't any of them where I'm from."

The longer Halifax talked, the less I understood. "You're saying... where you're from doesn't have airplanes?!"

Halifax nodded, a look of confusion still playing out on his face. "No, we don't, but now that you mention it, my father's machine was quite like one. I just... don't know why I know what an airplane is in the first place. I've never seen one before." He closed his eyes, as if trying to jog his memory, but nothing seemed to come, because he merely shrugged.

"Well, anyway, our father's machine was attacked by... something. I don't know what, so don't ask. It split the machine in two as we were traveling above here. My sister's half kept flying, but I was thrown from the other half. And landed in that smelly garbage place. That's how I ended up here."

I had no idea what to say in response.
