There I was, gut pounding with pain, a sweaty man on top of me, laughter echoing around the gym.
"Oh my gosh, Samson, are you alright?" Bruce said, quickly sliding off of me, face red. I had been trying my best to finesse my way across the basketball court without being noticed, but being sidelined by two-hundred-pounds of sheer unbridled masculinity ruined that plan. Unfortunately, now there was no way to skip the rest of gym class.
"I'm- I'm fine," I said, between gulping breaths. I was pretty sure that Bruce had rearranged several of my vital organs, but I tried to look unfazed. A group of boys had formed around us, some sympathetic to my inability to breathe, others smirking or outright laughing. They probably found it SO hilarious that the kid who hated sports just got decked by the star of the football team.
"I'm so sorry!" Bruce said, concern displayed on his face. "I didn't mean to—"
"I know," I interrupt, pain still twisting in my stomach. "I'm okay."
"Wasn't that so romantic?" Ferris Schaefer said. "You best believe Sammy wanted some of that action."
My face reddened. I thought I'd be able to make it through at least *one* class period without neanderthalic jokes, but there it was. A few of the boys shook their heads, but didn't say anything.
"Hey—" Bruce interjected. I looked at him quizzically. He wasn't typically one of the prime offenders, but he was usually quiet when his fellow jockheads threw around slurs.
"You never know, Bruce." Jeffrey Hayes snickered. "Sammy's probably SO turned on right now. If you're not careful, you'll end up getting railed under the bleachers."
I glanced down at the shiny wood of the basketball court, gritting my teeth. I couldn't talk back to them, that always ended poorly.
"Shut up!" Bruce said, standing up, his hands in fists.
"Hey Bruce, we were just joking..." Ferris said, raising his hands defensively. "It's not like we really think you're gay."
"Yeah, we were just giving Sammy here a hard time," Jeffrey interjected.
"His name is Samson. Apologize to him." Bruce said, fury in his eyes.
