"Noelle!"

The maid came rushing into the kitchen, fearing the worst. She spotted the unmistakeable sight of a growing flame. Grabbing the nearby water bucket, she dosed the charred attempt baking. Bless Amber for warning her, she wouldn't have prepared the bucket otherwise.

"I'm sorry..."
Bennett's guilt was audible. Noelle was kind enough to let him borrow the kitchen and here he was almost burning it down.

"How did you manage to set cookies on fire!?"
She opened a window and used a towel to wave out the smoke.

"I really didn't mean to, i don't know what i did wrong."

The maid sighed. Bennett was well-intentioned. He wanted to make something tasty for his dad's birthday. The dads, that's what he called the senior adventurers that raised him. He never had any other family, and made sure to check in on them regularly after their retirement. One of them lived far into the forest and didn't visit the city often. Bennett worried about him, what if he was lonely? So for his birthday he had planned a surprise! At least he hoped so, the charred crisps on the cooking plate could barely be called a gift...

"Maybe baking isn't your thing. How about i make the cookies instead?"

"You would? I wouldn't want to burden you."

Noelle looked at pitch black cooking plate and the coal-like attempt at treats. She didn't have the heart to tell him she lacked the energy to keep cleaning up his accident.
"I insist, please. You wouldn't want your cookies to be late for your dad's birthday right?

"I really wanted to make them myself..."

"I know you did. How about you find something to put them in while you travel?"

"I hadn't even thought about that, that's a great idea!"
As usual, his positive outlook was easily restored.

The adventurer thanked the maid as he walked out the door. What great friends i have, he thought to himself.

On his way to General Goods, he noticed the sun was getting low. He'd lost a lot of time burning his cookies and would have to leave soon if he wanted to travel in daylight.

"Good afternoon !"

"Good afternoon Bennett! Out planning for an adventure?"

"Sort of! Do you happen to sell baskets? I need to transport baked goods."

"Of course! How's this one?"
She pulled out a woven basket with a blanket to keep its cargo warm.

"Perfect!"

"That'll be 500 mora."

Bennett payed for the basket and left for the adventurer's guild. This day was going great so far. Soon he'd be able to leave for the forest and visit his oldest dad for his birthday.

He spent some time at the guild telling everyone where he was going and how long he expected it to take. He assumed he'd have to spend the night at his oldest dad's forest home, especially now that he was running late.

"Bennett, someone's here for you."

"That must be Noelle!"

Indeed it was. Her cookies looked amazing, much better than the coal pebbles he made himself. They smelled much better too, their sweet chocolate aroma filled the room as she put them in the basket.

"Noelle, these are amazing!"

"Thank you. you can tell me what your dad thinks of them when you get back."

"Will do!"

He was about to step out the door when it swung open and a girl rushed inside. The two ran into eachother and fell down.

"The cookies!"
Noelle was just in time to catch the basket as it flung through the air. All her hard work had almost gone to waste!

Bennett rubbed his head and looked at the person on the floor in front of them. A bright red outfit and long brown hair, it was his fellow adventurer Amber.

"Amber! are you okay?"

"Are you? sorry i didn't see you."

"It's okay, happens all the time. Wait- my basket!"

"Right here, i caught it."
Noelle handed it back.

"Gee, thanks Noelle. I owe you after all you've done for me today."

Amber could help her curiousity once she smelled the fresh chocolate scent.
"What have you got there?"

"Cookies for one of my dads! It's his birthday!"

"Don't your dads live here in the guild?"
Indeed, most did.

"He retired years ago. I'm going to bring these to him in the forest."

"The wolven forest!?"
Amber was full of energy, as usual.
"But it's so late! Isn't that dangerous?"

"Don't worry, nothing bad ever happens to me!"

He hoped the joke would lighten the mood. It failed, of course. The unluckiest person in the guild was going into the wolven forest at night by himself, of course his friends would be worried.

Noelle chimed in:
"I've already tried to talk him out of it. He insisted he go alone."

"My dad doesn't like crowds. Why else would he live in the middle of the forest! Its best i go by myself."

Amber shuffled left to right. She was irritated, her desire to help her friend overpowered her.
"If you're going out this late, let me borrow you my cloak! You don't want to catch a cold, do you?"

That wasn't a bad idea, Bennett wasn't dressed for this hour.
"I'd appreciate that!"

"Great! Wait here."

Amber rushed up the stairs. Bennett said goodbye to Noelle as he waited, she had to get back to her duties. The adventurer looked out the window to wave her goodbye, it had indeed gotten quite dark. The sun was no longer visible, only its bright red light painted the horizon. Bennett wouldn't admit it but he was getting worried too. Burning his cookies delayed him much more than he first thought.

"Here it is!"
Amber jumped down the stairs. In her arms was a folded piece of red fabric, just a bright as the rest of her clothes. It was a large cloak. She opened it and held it in front of Bennett, making sure it was the right size.
"This should keep you warm."

"Thanks Amber, i appreciate it."

Bennett put on the red riding hood and picked up his cookie basket. With that, he was finally ready to visit his dad!
