Directional surveys acquired by Measurement While Drilling (MWD) are subject to many errors that are not easily recognized by traditional Quality Control (QC) procedures. This commonly leads to inaccurate wellbore placement and greater positional uncertainty. Common sources of MWD survey error are inaccurate geomagnetic references, localized distortions in the natural magnetic field, poor instrument calibration, random sensor noise, magnetic mud, and human error. Often times, such errors go unrecognized due to limitations in traditional single-station QC tests. This is a significant problem because wellbore collision avoidance, geological modeling, and reservoir drainage are all greatly affected by wellbore placement accuracy. Fortunately, most sources of MWD error can now easily be identified and corrected through implementation of robust independent survey quality control processes. By using web-based systems to facilitate this process, drillers can benefit from the most powerful quality assurance practices which can be standardized across the industry regardless of service provider or vendor specific technologies.

The Coaching Guide originated in 2018 as part of a campaign to equip our Drilling Superintendents and HSE staff with additional tools and skills for coaching employees in the field. Recognizing the diverse skill sets among supervisors and managers, we aimed to support the development of these skills and provide a reference guide. Since its release, the guide has undergone updates to align with our core values and behaviors. Presently, we distribute these guides to new managers and employees seeking to enhance their people leadership skills. By sharing this, we hope it can serve as an additional resource to empower your own leaders. Safety is personal and it's our job to Actively C.A.R.E. for one another.

We know that energy exposures provide a significant amount of threat to a worker on a drilling rig. We also know it is important to have strong processes in place to help mitigate our exposure to energy as we Actively C.A.R.E. for ourselves and others. Mitigating these risks requires the development and refinement of robust processes and procedures, with worker input being key to ensure effectiveness and adherence. As the industry continues to evolve, so too must our commitment to safety, reflected in evolving processes, policies, and training practices.

Indeed, some simultaneous torque-drag-buckling calculations are presented and allow to properly take into account the additional contact force generated in a post-buckling configuration, and as a consequence the additional torque at surface. Secondly, this paper shows the influence of friction and rotation on buckling loads for some practical and critical cases met in the drilling industry. A sensitivity analysis was then conducted on several BHA types and lengths, considering different boundary conditions in vertical and horizontal wells. Directional models are found to be reasonably unsensitive to the choice of the effective length because they are based on steady-state computations, but the same cannot be stated for dynamics. This study developed a more robust approach to estimate properly the effective length for lateral vibrations, an essential for BHA resonance. Namely, the effect of the drillstring-wellbore contact distribution is showed to have a substantial impact on the SOT performance. Consequently, it was proved that optimal SOT characteristics Off-Bottom are generally not enough to overcome the friction when drilling. In addition, the torque and drag model is applied to a real case study of an unconventional well with surface and downhole data. As spring approaches in the United States, many of us drilling in Oklahoma and Texas welcome the nicer temperatures but must also remain weather-aware with an expectation of severe storms, and even tornadoes. This isn't something that could happen - it's something that did happen as I worked on an Oklahoma rig that was in the path of a tornado one year ago.

Once the tasks of laying down casing and drill pipe were completed, the derrick was then lowered and replaced. The crew was cleared to resume drilling ahead. "Yeah, that was April 19. Then on May 11, we had another one, right across the highway from us. You could chunk a rock at it." Drilling in remote locations - whether in the middle of the ocean, the middle of a rainforest, or the middle of rural Oklahoma - brings its own set of issues when inclement weather takes place. Multiple methods of monitoring exist in the event that systems are unavailable. The Starlink satellite system on all H&P rigs, storm radios, high tech rig phones, and even a basic antenna for local channels all ensure accurate and up to date weather information is available. A Well Site Leader working on a rig in West Texas' Delaware Basin identified that their conventional mud motor was stalling at a much lower differential pressure than the motor was supposed to be rated for, indicating that the motor in hole was weak. H&P recommended the newly released StallAssist® software which is designed to detect, mitigate, and recover from downhole stalls. As pressure is reaching the stall rating, the system continually and simultaneously evaluates several factors, including: pressure, the speed in which the pressure is rising, and motor specifications. These dynamic, real-time calculations help lessen the severity of pressure that is outside motor limitations.

Safety performance in the drilling industry is typically measured based on Occupational Safety and Health Administration ("OSHA") recordable injuries and the active rig years worked without an OSHA recordable injury, lost-time, or disabling injury. We view these metrics as lagging indicators, which can and have encouraged the wrong behavior such as under reporting incidents. While we still track these metrics for regulatory purposes, we have improved our safety efforts using a prevention-based methodology called C.A.R.E. (Control and Removal of Exposures).

With directional drilling in today's market, well placement is of ever-increasing importance in the process of successfully drilling a well. Well placement by Measurements While Drilling (MWD) uses the direction of the Earth's gravity and magnetic field as a natural reference frame. For years, the industry standard used low resolution global models for this reference, such as the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF-13). These models only captured a fraction of the true complexity of the Earth's magnetic field, leading to inaccurate MWD corrections and consequently large uncertainties in the wellbore's final placement.

A "trip" is the process of pulling drillpipe from the wellbore or running the pipe back to the bottom of the wellbore. The manual work performed during a trip inherently increases the risk of an injury, and any time the drillpipe is removed from the wellbore, there is an increased risk of a well control event. They are then integrated in the torsional equation of motion of the stick-slip model. A case study is carried out to show the consistency between the simulated results and field data. Stick-slip is a highly damaging dysfunction that adversely effects all components of the drill string. In the case of this paper, the subject well experienced high stick-slip resulting in inefficient drilling and increased risk of equipment failure. Modelling of the drill string successfully replicated the stick-slip response observed at the rig site. Further modelling with consideration of the motor bend angle's effect successfully showed a reduction in stick-slip magnitude. This modeling led to an optimum drill string design associating the steerable mud motor assembly, aluminum drill pipe, axial oscillation tool and steel drill pipe. The number and placement of aluminum drill pipe along the string was key to reducing friction and improving weight transfer between the bit and the axial oscillation tool. Want to know more about us?
