Fueled by a desire to become a teacher, Loren Mayshark entered Hunter College in 2008, with the intention of gaining a master's degree in two years. Six years and tens of thousands of dollars later, he abandoned his studies without attaining the degree. This is the tale of one young man's journey through the labyrinth of American higher education, stymied by haughty professors, an inept administration, and ridiculous policies. In the process, he nearly lost his desire for academic learning and his reverence for the educational system, and came close to losing his will to live. As Mayshark discovered, his experience was not unique. Across the United States, graduate students are increasingly finding themselves caught in a vortex. The casualties, as this book makes clear, are the next generation of American minds. This story will be updated three times per week every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until it is completed. Experience the Dark Corners of Higher Education in the U.S. from a Student's Perspective Note: The names of key figures have been changed.

Writing a PhD dissertation is one of the most demanding experiences in academic life. It is a journey of exhilaration and fear, filled with sleepless nights, endless rewrites, and a constant battle with doubt. The moment you decide to pursue a doctorate, excitement collides with uncertainty. You dream of research and discovery, yet quickly realize the road is paved with obstacles few talk about. Isolation becomes one of the biggest challenges. While friends advance in their careers, you are often alone, staring at a blank page and questioning every choice. Impostor syndrome whispers that you are not good enough. Yet, within these struggles lie moments of breakthrough - a theory finally making sense, a chapter clicking into place, or data revealing a clear pattern. These small victories breathe life into the long, exhausting process. The dissertation is not a sprint but a marathon. Early stages brim with enthusiasm, but the middle often feels endless, and the final stretch tests every ounce of endurance. Draft after draft is torn apart and rebuilt. Feedback stings, but it slowly shapes your work into something stronger. Through tears, frustration, and rare flashes of triumph, you begin to transform. By the end, you emerge not only with a dissertation but with resilience, discipline, and a new sense of self. You discover that progress matters more than perfection, that struggle can lead to strength, and that no PhD is ever truly finished alone. The journey is exhausting and life-changing - and it leaves you forever changed.

Choosing the right MBA college in India is an important decision for students and working professionals planning long-term career growth. With many institutions available, factors such as entrance exams, tuition fees, specializations, and placement outcomes must be carefully evaluated. Welcome to my American Days' Journals! I do not particularly have any talent in writing things up from scratch, especially not my own experience as a Fulbright scholar, but you have got to start somewhere, especially if you are too afraid that you'll forget what you believe to be the time of your life. I warn you that this piece of writing might turn out to become a journal article in the end, not that I am really good at writing those either, but I am now here to get better at it anyways. So, it seems, it will be two writing types I want to get better at eventually. This fact came as a shock to me as well, when after a Stanford football match, 1,5 weeks into my scholarship period, I jumped into bed, fired up my laptop and just felt the urge to type. Just to be absolutely clear, I am not a fan of expressing myself in speech, neither do I like writing blog entries or too long chunk of texts that are not academic in nature. And to be honest, sometimes an academic text is just a pain to write, too. Pure pain. If my researcher colleagues all around the world read this, they know what I am talking about. If my close colleagues read this, then I am joking, ofc. So, let's get to it, as it is late at night and tomorrow I have an early Dragon boat practice.
