    In October 1940, Nathan Northmore, an early pioneer of social psychiatry is a professor at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire. One day, he receives correspondence from a friend, a private investigator, Roger Bankert, who is investigating the brutal murder of a priest in the northern New Hampshire town of Epiales. Before the priest's death, he was about to expose a local cult leader, Valon Vokshi who previously taught at both the local Black Crescent University and Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts. They encounter a former member of Vokshi's cult who warns he is possesses otherworldly powers. Northmore, a professional skeptic is unconvinced, but as he continues his investigation, he learns the man is capable of more than he thought possible. As bodies begin to stack, the circumstances of the deaths become far more horrifying than he realized.
