My breath caught and my heart thundered in my ears.

"Lily," Rachel's voice cut through the noise, and the pup's head popped up. "There's someone here I'd like you to meet."

She scrambled to her feet and turned around, and my gaze snapped to hers. She had my eyes. Goddess, she had my eyes.

I found myself crouching down to her level, eager to be closer to her, unable to keep myself away. I had her for thirty-six minutes when she was born, holding her close, wishing beyond anything that she could stay with me. And here she was, my little flower, happy and healthy, and I had no idea what to do.
