When the Doom of Valyria was prophesied, Daenys Targaryen told her family. But Daenys also told her lover, who was of House Maezyra, who then told three other Great Houses of Valyria. As one, these houses sailed north through the Narrow Sea, before finding a small continent just north of Essos, where they settled together as New Valyria.

Four centuries later, after the rebellion and eventual defeat of the Targeryens, the Four Houses of Old Valyria had to assure the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros that there was no bad blood left between the two. This sets off a sequence of events that led to the Era of Reform, also known as, The Era of Rebirth.
