"Viridian"

In solitary sanctuary, it scurries away,
A sluggish stand-still, to its dismay.
With slow steps, it trudges around,
A silent friend, no louder sound.

Its shell, its home, a fortress strong,
To dwell, to roam as it moves along.
Through rapid paths and vapid grass,
It wanders around surprisingly fast.

Its eyes shine in iridescent viridescence,
Its shell gleams a pearlescent essence.
Incessant, it graces us with its humble presence,
Although still in prepubescent adolescence.

It loves the sea that moves so roguishly,
Where water flows, fast and free.
It dives, it floats, in blissful frivolity,
Unmatched, unchained, a prideful sovereignty.

Under shade, is where it laid,
Content it conveyed.
Its energy decayed,
after roughly it had played.

It's food, a leaf, finished with a violent bite,
A simple feast of pure delight.
Out of view, out of sight,
It's happy to rest under the light.

In winter's cold, it rests so deep,
A little cave where it can sleep.
Till springtime calls it from its dreams,
To bask again in golden beams.

Its journey's slow, going here and there,
Its time, plentiful, so much to spare,
Moving about without a care.
Without spoiling the ambience of the gentle air.

If vulnerable it vicariously vacates it's resting place,
Vigilantly it visits its vast open space.
Vigorously, and victoriously it swims in visual grace,
Then vanishes from view at a violent pace.

So here's to those peculiar creatures, praise their passive souls,
Who live their plentiful lives with paced and persistent goals.
With patience, peace, and playful grace,
The perfect pet to teach us all to slow our pace.
