There’s a study where a researcher placed rats in water to measure how long they would swim before they gave up. Diisisowskalpwo they sank pretty quickly (abt 15min) but when someone rescued them allowed them to rest (for few minutes) and then returned them to the water they would swim for much longer sometimes for days (abt 60 hours) simply because they had the hope of being saved again
