Dr. James McInnis previously worked as an Emergency Physician at McMaster University Hospital for a tenure of four years before becoming the Director of Care at the Wasaga/Angus Community Health Center - Family Practice.

In 2010, he was commissioned as a Class B reservist in the Medical Division of the Canadian Armed Forces.

He has a long-standing commitment to volunteering, starting from his medical school days. He dedicated his efforts to the Barrington Street Shelter in Halifax, conducting medical assessments and aiding people experiencing homelessness. His volunteering extended to shelters in Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario, where he also served at an STD clinic linked to those shelters. He focused on supporting individuals transitioning out of the sex trade, ensuring they received the necessary education and protection. He also spent time tutoring children in group homes.

He is a dedicated father to three daughters (ages 24, 19, and 9) and one son (age 22), with whom he enjoys participating in outdoor and sporting activities. His involvement in his children's lives extends to supporting their extracurricular activities; he has coached minor hockey for more than ten years with the Wasaga Beach and Barrie Minor Hockey Associations, volunteered at Simcoe Figure Skating for over five years, and contributed over five years as a volunteer at his daughter's dance troop.

As a practicing Christian, he attends Mapleview Christian Church weekly along with his children.
