I remember vividly as I walked into the school building, I became more nervous than I already was. I remember gripping my fathers hand as tight as my 5 year old hand could squeeze. What more can a kindergartener do?
I was never the type of kid to throw a temper tantrum when I didn't get what I wanted. I was lucky enough to even attend to school. District 12. The seam.
It was never the luckiest district and still isn't.
When my father dropped me off, the teachers brought us to this big open room called an assembly room.
I saw a little boy about my age enter the room with who I assume is his father. The boy had wavy blonde hair and ocean blue eyes and light skin. I had recognized the father from the bakery.
He and his family owned the bakery. I see the boy looked more nervous than I did. The baker points to a little girl, she had two little pig tail braids and a small plaid dress. The baker starts to whisper to the little boy.
Before the assembly started we had time to pick our seats and sit down, it wasn't easy to get a bunch of 5 year olds to sit still. I took that time to make a new friend.
I remember I was nervous to talk to anyone but I went up to the blue eyed boy and said
"hi, what's your name?"
"Peeta" the little boy said nervously
"I'm y/n" I told him
"Do you wanna... be friends?" He asked nervously
"Sure!" I said excitedly.
I remember how he had looked at me with relief.
We sat next to each other for the assembly and had been friends ever since. After our first day of school, Peeta and I walked home together, he lived two doors down from me.
As we walked home, I asked him
"I saw that before the assembly, your father pointed to a little girl, what'd he say?" I asked innocently
"When he was young, he wanted to marry her mother. Her mother decided to run off with a coal miner instead I guess." He explained
"oh" I replied.
A couple minutes passed by with silence,
"I think she sang the valley song pretty well, don't you?" I said
"The birds stopped singing when she sang." He said blushing.
