AUTHORS NOTE: This is based on my own experiences with the church being homophobic towards me and my struggle with internalized homophobia. I call homosexuality "sinful" repeatedly in this story because that was my mindset a few years ago. Being gay or queer or trans is 100% natural and you deserve to be loved and accepted.

The bell rung through the hollow, large room, sound bouncing off chiseled marble walls. Everyone had their heads down, hands folded in their laps, as a man in formal black and white clothes stood behind a podium. The Holy Bible sat spread open on it, bookmarked to Leviticus 20:13, the verse engraved in his head, one that tainted his ears everyday. The words felt like bullets, punishing him for his urges.

If a man lies with a man as one lies with woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads

The preacher shouted this out as people shouted amen, he waved his hands and spoke with his chest as he preached how homosexuals shall burn, that none are welcome in the church, how they go against the Lord's word.

Schlatt kept his head down as he listened, nodding and marking the page in his Bible. Men and women, the natural balance of life. Men and women, the two that mix so well that it was the only one acceptable in society. In science.

Schlatt shuffled his feet, rubbing them softly on the red carpet. Red like His eyes, like His skin, like the fire he had around him. Red like His horns and tail, red like the claws that will drag him to hell. Red like the blood he would shed if he ever muttered the words of love he had for his friend, red like the crimson drops of himself he left on the bathroom sink whenever he felt his heart swell at his friends voice.

He turned the delicate pages of his book, not following the texts as the man in front of him read out loud. Instead he let his mind wander, eyes tracing the painting on the walls of the white skinned man with cream coloured garments hanging from his skinny body, a red sash crossing his body with a glowing heart.

If only He could save him. Schlatt felt tears sting his 15 year old eyes, quickly itching them to get rid of them and looking down, clasping his shaky hands together. He whispered so quietly only the big man upstairs would hear.

"Dear Lords, please save me. Please forgive me, my mind can't get him out of my mind. Please, save me from these sinful urges and wash me in your blood. Please see my sacrifices as enough to please you and your holyness to save myself from the Devils grasp. Please Lord, take me and give me wings as pure as your gaze. Amen."

The old women next to him shifted, wrapping her coat around her arms and trying to get up. Schlatt looked up and realized everyone was walking out. He quickly stood and put his arm out for the old woman to grab. Her boney hands wrapped around it and she leaned on him, slowly and shakily standing on her withered legs. She looked good-natured but sad, as if she has lost everything in her life but still was giving.

She smiled at him, he wrinkled skin crinkling by her eyes and cheeks. "Thank you young man, you'll be a fine husband for a lucky woman," she exhaled an empty laugh, pinching his cheek slightly as he lead her out. He let out a forced laughed, a strange feeling growing in his stomach. He felt sick? Anxious? He wasn't sure, maybe even guilty. "I hope so."

He soon lead her to a table in the hallway covered in donuts. She assured him she was fine and he left, grabbing a jelly donut before going to the front desk.
