"Thanks for the ride!" I say into the car before slamming the door shut. Paul waves goodbye before driving off. I take the last bite of my Egg McMuffin before throwing it away in a trashcan. I pull myself together and I walk in. Pepper wasn't down here waiting for me. I look at the large clock on the wall, and I was only three minutes late. Was that bad?
The only person there was the reception desk girl. I remember seeing her yesterday when I had the interview. She looked a few years older than me. I slowly walked up to the desk where the girl looks at me with a smile. "How may I help you today?"
"Hi, uh, I'm here for the internship job?"
"Oh, yes! Ms. Potts apologizes for not being here to greet you, she had some things to work on. However, she told me to tell you to go on the fifth floor, room 5B."
I thanked the girl before walking towards the elevator.
Once I got on the floor, I began searching for the room. I was hoping to pass someone so I could ask for directions, and immediately after I thought that, I saw a tall man texting on his phone. My good luck seems to spread everywhere. I just hope I don't jinx it.
"Excuse me?" He looked up from his phone and smiled at me. He was so significantly taller than me that I had to look up at him. And I thought I was tall.
"Do you need help with something?" He asked, and I rubbed the back of my neck.
"I'm a bit lost, do you know where room 5B is?"
He said "Yes! Just go down this hallway and take a right turn and on the right side you should find the room."
Thank gods he wasn't rude.
I thanked him and went on my way. I found the room and knocked. After a moment, I heard a muffled yell, "Come in!"
I walked in and I saw it was a lounge room that looked similar to the waiting room by Mr. Starks's office. With lots of lounge chairs and tables. A coffee machine sat on a table at the corner of the room. Tall, plants (most likely fake) lined the back wall. Pepper was sitting on one of the couches holding an iPad. "Percy! How are you doing?" She exclaimed.
"Good. You?"
"So-so, but I'm excited to work with you today. I'm sorry I couldn't meet you downstairs, I had a last-minute meeting I had to go to. But you came at the perfect time because I just finished," she explained to me.
I sat down on a chair across from where Pepper sat.
"So, before we go meet Mr. Stark, I'd love to go over some things with you if that's all right."
"Yeah, of course," I nod mindlessly, looking at Pepper.
"Great! So as you know, you're a paid-intern here but you will be treated the same as any other employee, well, I lied, I meant everyone other than Tony would. It depends on how he treats you, but you left such a big impression on him the other day that I'm sure he'll praise you well."
"Is he really that bad?" I lean in closer to Pepper, curious on her answer.
In response, she just chuckled, "It's different for everyone. I've been working for him for a long, long time and even now he treats me like a newbie. You didn't hear that from me though," she points at me, and I raise my hands in the air in a surrendering motion.
"Don't worry, your secret's safe," I grin. I already have a pile of secrets, why not add one more to the stack?
"But you will be required to use a computer, organize files, reply to emails, help with his scheduled, and shadow him around. But you may also be tasked with doing simple things like getting him coffee or ordering lunch for the team," Pepper looks back at her iPad to see if she has to go over any more things with me but I couldn't help but wonder what she meant by "team".
"By team, do you mean, like, the Avengers? Or-"
Peppers breaks into a laugh, "Oh, no, no, no! Not that kind of team. It's highly unlikely that you'll get involved with them. I meant like the corporate office team."
"Oh," I looked down, my cheeks red from embarrassment.
"Don't worry about it, though. I met the Avengers and they're not as big and mighty as everyone thinks," she winks at me before standing up, indicting that our conversation on this subject us over. "Well, that's honestly all I needed to go over with you. I'll walk you to Mr. Stark's office."
She leads me down the hall and into an elevator where soft music played in the background. My heart raced faster the higher we went up. I know Zeus hadn't punished me the last time I was here; however, I couldn't help but feel worried.
She leads me to his office where she knocks on the double doors as she did when I first arrived. She pokes her head in the door and says something to Mr. Stark before looking back at me. "He's ready for you. Good luck on your first day!" She gives me a soft smile that made me eyes squint, and she walked out; the familiar click of her heels gradually disappeared
When I walked in, he was eating a muffin. Actually, he was eating 2 muffins at the same time. A chocolate one and a blueberry muffin. He looked up and beckoned me over. "Hey, kid. What's up?"
"Oh, uh, nothing," I answered awkwardly.
"Kay, cool." He said while slowly swallowing his food. "I need you to organize this work load over here. Alphabetically," he pointed at a stack of papers and folders. "I also got a meeting at one o'clock, so you'll you to attend that with me as well."
"All right, then," I said softly, grabbing the tall stack of papers on his deck. The weight of the papers surprised me, I didn't expect it to be so heavy. I looked around the room, and I realized there was nowhere for me to work."
"Uh, hey, is there somewhere I can work?"
"Hm?" He mumbled, looking up from his phone.
"Where am I supposed to work?"
"Ah, right! I forgot," he started walking out the door. But when he realized that I wasn't following him, he raised his eyebrows "Well? Are you coming or not?"
——————
I followed him into the room across the hall. And when we walked in, it was a large room (not as large as Mr. Stark's, of course) with a desk, plants, paintings, and a marble counter on the right side of the wall. And similar to Mr. Stark's, I too had floor-to-ceiling windows that made me awe. "So here's your office, sorry it's a big small, it was the best we could get before you came," He proudly announced.
"Wait, this is mine?" I stammered out, almost dropping the stack of papers in my hand.
"Well, where else are you going to do all the work, huh? A trash can?" He joked.
I blinked at him, and he rolled his eyes. "Yes, it's yours."
And before I could even thank him, he walks out, leaving me alone in my own office.
This is gonna be a interesting summer.
