A/N: Is this a flashback, present time, or a flash-forward in time. You guess
I followed the bird once again, dodging through the trees and moving bushes with my hands. We reached the lake, I grabbed my leaf out of it's hiding spot, under one of the only sycamore trees on the island.
The branches swerved and spiraled, the bark like a birch, but less of a white and the black a light-ish brown and less flaky, green leaves sprouted from the branches but hidden in a blanket of mist, the trunk wider than me and around it was full of light tan grass, the grass thin but grew fast and there was a lot of it, not that it mattered.
I sighed as I watched Alex drink without me, I quickly grabbed my palm leaf and walked down the hill the sycamore was on, the tree hidden by a thin mist. I twisted the leaf in my hands, it was about one foot tall and four inches wide, perfect for drinking from a lake without polluting the water.
I grabbed a piece of death berry bush from by sachel made from green leaves, then I grabbed six pieces of thin but strong long grass. I took off the eye patch currently over my eye, not wanting to look in my reflection, I weaved the grass in the death berry bush and made it suitable for my eye by comparing it to the other.
Here's a quick summary of what happened to his eyes and why he uses death berries:
It had been about a month since Alex opened his eye to the island he had never seen before. He opened both eyes about two weeks ago, a week on the island but only saw from one eye, he had then had a flashback of when a voice (his voice) was reading about herbs and their healing properties when he went to sleep. (I did not look anything up so this is all on memory and hypothesizes)
It is not supposed to be eaten by humans, will kill whoever eats but has certain healing properties, do not squeeze the Death Berry's juice in eyes when trying to use is it for healing, use the leaves instead.
And then he woke up, he figured that since it said don't squeeze it in your eyes, it must be applied a different way to heal, so he found some death berries and picked the berries and leaves, he first tried dying the leaves with the berry juice, but after a week of making a new eye patch every day, nothing happened but his eyesight in his left eye getting worse, the flurry of colors and dots getting bigger and blurrier, so then he tried just the leaves, tying it to his head with the long grass he found.
That was this week, this was the third day of him trying the leaves without the berry juice dried onto the small leaves.
I sat on the soft dirt-sand on both my knees, looking at the multi-colored parrot named Alex fly above my head, I looked back at the lake, it was filled with water, my worst enemy. I slowly breathed in and out, I was OK.
I grabbed my leaf again after securing my eye patch and dipping the leaf into the lake, it filled up with the non-salted water, my hands shaking a little. I pulled it towards my mouth, ready for the refreshing water.
A small green leaf fell from up above me, I watched it fall until I looked at the leaf I was holding, seeing a boy with brown messy hair pulled into a small bun in the middle of his head, the bun itself was messy with some twigs and leaves in it. His eye was a weird blue-purple (I know, only his eyes are historical) and skin dry as hot sand, his lips were cracked and an eye patch made of leaves and grass hung over his left eye, bags visible under both his eyes, even with an eye patch. The boy was not a skeleton but skinny, he had enough food and water and his mind exploding with a million thoughts.
I only saw the boy in the leaf for a second before flinging it in the water. Who was that? I wish I knew.... Though I wish I know who that was, facts rule over hope, even if there's just one fact and everyone in the world hopes, the fact will win. I won't ever get to know who that was, though he looked familiar.
I realized what I did and cursed under my breath. My perfect leaf for drinking water was floating in the lake- it was gone! Now I had to find a new one. I sighed and got up, I put my right arm out horizontally and Alex fell to my arm, I had gotten used to the pain of his/her claws but my skin didn't, there were scabs and scars but they felt so good to pick, especially when I'm bored, it was something to do, I could always make more pain come, Alex is a gift I am grateful for.
I started running down the paths I made -just a path of bushes and grass smushed down in a clear path- looking for a leaf that would suit the job, thick and no holes, soft and not crumbly. Then I heard a "WOOOOOOOO!" as a faint-ish echo. Is someone else living on the island? Was my first thought.
After a minute of fighting my own thoughts, I decided to follow -sprint/run really fast towards the sound just in case the person was in trouble- where the shout came from, then a heard a frightened "AAAAHHH!" Just an echoed scream, but it sounded like a different person, by my calculations, it's a black teenager, not to be racist or anything, but he had a deeper voice and still had a younger pitch to the scream, but these were just calculations. While the first shout came from a.... Tan teenager who was a daredevil.
I smirked mistiviously, still running through the woods of a tree I think that was Basswood, I could see spruces up ahead, then I smiled at the realization that they could have traveled here by boat and bring me to other land.... If there was any more land out there, for what I know, this could be the only island in the world. But no, it can't.
I reached a pond-lake thing, it was polluted by me and other stuff, it was a little darker than normal clear water. I looked around, (John's arm goes numb) this pond familiar since it was below my house. I slept in a tree, I placed bark that I peeled of trees (RIP) and made platforms, and had enough patience to make a blanket just in case it was cold but it was normally warm. I also made a pillow from leaves.
This is how it worked:
1. Place bark and secure it to make a steady platform to stand and jump on.
2. Make a pillow, just for some comfort, then make a bed to support my whole body (I just pilled leaves from above the leafy tree, the type of it unknown but it was brown, full of leaves and branches. Make a blanket for cold nights.
3. Make sachel to put fruit in. Make tiny bags that hold fruit but keep at the fort. Find a way to get healthy/clean water without polluting it.
4. Clean myself and make new clothes of big palm leaves. Make eye patch.
My head snapped up as I heard snapping sticks, I looked up, only mist- wait- what was that vibrant-eye-killing-yellow-thing shaped like a mushroom? the snapping got louder and became less of an echo, the snapping also started happening more frequently. Then it stopped, I moved closer to what was the sound, moving around the pond. Now it was silent- wait, nope. Silent grunting and rolling noises replaced the millisecond silence. I squinted my eye and saw a living thing (human) rolling down the mountain.
He was rolling into the pond- He could die, I know it's deep, deeper than ten feet by the darkness, the water is also polluted. I did what I thought I would never do, I jumped into my biggest fear.
I jumped into the pond- luckily I had two spare pairs of clothing.
A/N: Hope you don't mind how long the paragraphs are and how long or short the chapters are, the first three are about 450-600 words and this one is 1448.... Ehem, sorry, next chapter!
