Part 6: Trouble St. James

"Hi!" Jesse got up from the couch and smiled. "Kurt. Right?" He said as though he had never met me before. "Rachel told me you were roommates, nice to meet you."

I frowned and I saw Rachel do the same. "Jesse, I hope you do know we were in the same glee club for a while. You don't remember me?"

His eyes widened. "Oh, right! Kurt! Sorry, I totally forgot about you."

Jesse St. James everybody. The only person I had ever met who was more full of himself than Rachel Berry. Which was why they were a perfect match, of course, that was until he had thrown eggs at her face. Rachel first met him back in sophomore year of high school. He was a senior at that time and also the shining star of Vocal Adrenaline, the opposing glee club of Carmel High School, so basically, our enemy. But when they met, it was clear they were perfect for each other. They were both very talented and self-absorbed. He had transferred to our school and joined our glee club because nobody was okay with two people from opposing teams having a relationship. I never really liked Jesse, but then it turned out that he had been instructed to befriend Rachel by his coach, he transferred back to Carmel, egged Rachel in a parking lot with his team mates and ever since then I could barely stand the guy. I know Rachel forgave him a long time ago, they even almost got back together two years ago, but I didn't trust Jesse St. James one bit.

"I had no idea you two were hanging out." I said.

"Jesse called me a few weeks ago and said he was in town, so we have met up a couple times. We just wanted to get some coffee today, but it turns out that cozy little coffee shop near the bridge closed due to financial problems. Did you know that? So sad, it was such a cute place. Anyway, we decided to just come back here." Rachel explained.

"Because there are no other coffee places in New York." I mumbled under my breath and hoped neither of them had heard me. "So, Jesse! What are you doing here? Visiting NYC?"

"I actually am looking for a place to live." He grinned at Rachel.

"Really?" The thought of Jesse moving to New York and being around constantly unnerved me. "Why?"

"I always wanted to come here, plus, I got offered a role in the ground-breaking musical Mamma Mia." He was clearly very pleased with himself, you could tell from the smug smile on his face. Rachel smiled at him in awe. It took me a while to process what he'd said.

"Wha-, the one on Broadway?" My eyes widened.

He rolled his eyes. "What other one did you think I was talking about?"

I shrugged, my cheeks reddened. "What part did you get?"

"Oh, I'm just playing an extra." His smug expression dimmed a little.

"It's still a huge accomplishment!" Rachel said.

"Yeah, congratulations." I could stand him even less at that point. Jesse was extremely talented and he proved it again by scoring a role in a Broadway musical after only being in New York for a couple weeks. After I was past the small, initial shock, an overwhelming wave of jealousy came over me and I turned around, walked into the kitchen and pretended to be looking for something in a cabinet, I counted to ten and took deep breaths, to calm myself down. Behind me I could hear Jesse saying that his role was nothing compared to the huge Broadway debut Rachel would soon make.

"We were thinking about going out for some dinner later, do you want to join us?" Rachel asked me. I closed the kitchen cabinet, after I'd taken out a mug I didn't plan on using. I briefly considered her offer, mainly because I didn't want to cook for myself tonight, but I could already picture how the night would go. Rachel and Jesse would probably not stop talking about how excited they were to be on Broadway and become the stars they had always wanted to be, and I would be the third wheel, having to listen to their dreams coming true while I pondered over my boring, single life. Also, at some point Rachel and Jesse would start flirting with each other and that would be awkward for no one except me. By the end of the night I would most likely be on the verge of depression. So, I shook my head.
