So I usually wouldn't talk about this because I'm kind of a private person but this has been on my mind a lot lately so I wanted to talk about it and kind of bring awareness to it so here we go.
Racism towards Asians, more specifically Asian-Americans, is so ignored and seen as normal. I am half-Korean and half white and I never realized how many racist things had been said to me over my life (I'm only 14) that I had never even known as racist until recently. "Ching chong" should be known as a racial slur towards Asians. If you were to say the n-word, which I am very aware of how terrible the history behind that word is, you could be charged with a hate crime. If you say "ching chong" or things similar to that, it's just kind of brushed under the rug as normal.
Another incredibly offensive thing to do is when people push their eyelids back to make them more almond-shaped. The amount of times that my friends have done this to me or just done it, in general, is shocking. Now, I know my friends don't really understand which is why I am talking about this. It may seem like it shouldn't be a big deal, but if you do that towards an Asian person, you are basically making fun of them for something they have zero control over. THEY'RE JUST EYES! WHY SHOULD IT MATTER THAT OUR EYES LOOK DIFFERENT THAN YOURS? It shouldn't. But apparently, it does.
I am in no way saying that only white people do this but this is mainly targeted towards white people as they are usually the ones being racist because they do not understand what it is like to receive racism. Don't get me wrong, I have been called things by POC and even Asians from different countries. It is quite shocking to me that grown adults, parents, and even teachers, feel that it is okay to make fun of and be racist towards Asian people. I always thought that I had to be super smart because I'm Asian and that's just how we are but now I can see that that was a stereotype that had been burned into my brain. My friends, would say things like, "Can you help me with my math homework?" and I would say something like "Oh sorry I'm too busy." or "I don't actually understand it either." and they would always say something along the lines of "But you're Asian? This should be super easy for you."
I have also been asked multiple times if I speak English. I was born and raised in America and the only language I speak is English. People tend to assume that just because I 'don't look American' that I don't speak English or that because I am of a different race than them, that I must speak that other language. Heck, my mother who is a Korean immigrant barely even speaks Korean. I genuinely don't understand why the fact that I and all other people of different ethnicities, races, and backgrounds mean that I am not equal to you.
We are all humans and we all bleed red and if you can't see that then please spend some time educating yourself instead of reading fanfiction.
I also just want to add that I respect and love the LGBTQ+ community and I stand by and support you all. I do not support J.K. Rowling and her opinions in any way. Stay safe during the pandemic and keep your masks on!
I love you guys and thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
