Chapter 4: Hell

As I stared into the green eyes of this mysterious wolf, I couldn't help but notice how similar they were in comparison to Sophia's... or even my mate's.

She was staring at me too, frozen on the other side of the river and in the Dragon Beat Pack territory. At first I wasn't too sure on what to do, seeing as she was from another pack and she was also the one who I had seen here a couple of nights ago on my midnight run. This was the wolf who I had felt a tiny attraction too.

I got up from my place at the root of the tree and made my way to the edge of the river on my territory; never breaking eye contact and analyzing every move she made. The wolf also walked closer to the river and sat at the edge, tilting her head to the side. The movement had brought thoughts to mind of how cute her shy and cautious actions were.

Despite my attraction to her, I couldn't help but think that there was a possibility that she had already found her mate and I was in the wrong by staring at her, or also the possibility that she was in fact a middle aged woman who liked to go out for walks in wolf form.

Deciding to break the silence - even though her wolf couldn't talk - I spoke a greeting.

"Hello?" My greeting came as more of a question, yet she seemed to smile a little. I stared incredulously at how I could notice that on a wolf with a snout.

She bowed her head whilst keeping eye contact and I took that as her very own greeting.

"By any chance, will you change back into you human form for me?"

She thought about it for a few seconds and then shook her head to decline. I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed with that. Not wanting her to catch onto my disappointment, I turned to face away. She must have still grasped the dismay because I could hear a soft whimper from her.

The way she immediately cared about my unhappiness led me to believe that maybe she was the Omega in her pack. I mean that's what an Omega's job was; to calm and emotionally comfort other members of the pack

I was still looking at a far away tree to my right when from the corner of my eye I caught sight of her waving her paw up and down whilst whining to get my attention. I looked back into her green eyes and saw that she was amused.

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and she looked away, probably talking to her wolf, as I could see that small wolfish grin spread across her snout again. She then looked back at me nodded her head. Just before I could grin, she started to shake her head again which lead me into more confusion.

Then she suddenly looked up at the setting sun and I somehow managed to grasp what she was saying.

"Yes, but not right now?" I asked seeking reassurance.

Her head bobbed up and down eagerly, happy that I had understood her complicated actions. I could feel myself at ease and soon enough I was laughing, a carefree laugh, at how she was acting. Scratch the idea of her being a middle aged woman then, maybe a young teenager?

She also seemed happy while I laughed. As soon as my laughter died down, I realized that from sitting she had moved to half laying and half sitting position where she was now also using her stomach for support and instead of paws, she was resting on her forearms. She was getting comfortable.

"Do you come here a lot?" I asked.

She nodded her head.

"How old are you, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty-"

As I started to count up the numbers, I was interrupted by a bark of confirmation at the number twenty. I smiled in acknowledgement to our similar ages. I stared deep into her eyes once more and realized for the first time that behind her current happiness was pain and sadness.
