Chapter 2: The Watch

The next morning I sat up in my bed recalling all the events of last nights encounter with the gorgeous girl with whom I danced with for those few brief seconds. Considering the short period of time together, I still felt like I had spent hours noticing little things, intricately pieced together in her physical appearance. Her hair was brown, and fell in light curls; her eyes, green and filled with life; her lips, seductive and soft; her hips, curvy and generous. Many more details had registered into my mind, but with those features it seemed that someone else had come to my mind.

Traitorous, I know. I should have been reminiscing with the thoughts of my mate and my mate alone. Although, there were a few complications. She was reminding me of someone who had died right in front of my eyes. Someone who I had loved dearly. Someone who I had been convinced would turn out to be my mate due to how perfect she felt in my arms and how perfect she felt to me.

Hermia was an on and off relationship; constantly arguing and mainly using one another as a sexual outlet. But this woman... she was more, so much more. We had grown up together, gone to school together and most importantly, we had been each other's first's in almost everything. Her name was Sophia.

Sophia's hair was brown and wavy, lose curls when she had managed to tame it. Her eyes were like emeralds and her lips were always catching my attention right after her eyes. Her hips, so often swaying with mine, were a perfect encounter for both my hands as they fit perfectly. When we hugged and when we kissed, it would feel like there was no one else in the world.

I cared. I cared way too much, and after her and her family's death I had been the one who felt weak, vulnerable and... broken. She was my world and I was too much in love. She was and always will be, my one true love. Her death being just before our eighteenth birthdays had ensured that we would never have found out if we were true mates or not.

Yet, the Moon Goddess had done some justice to the wolves who lose their love before getting the chance to be together as one. She must have decided it was time to meet my mate, and when I found her I came to realize that... I hated her. I could never possibly complete the mate bond with someone who looked so much like Sophia. Someone who would give me everything I one day hoped Sophia would give me.

The woman from last night, my mate, was just as shocked as I had been at finding our mates. Her face shone with delight and happiness at discovering her soul mate, and I could feel my wolf howling in joy too. But I couldn't bring myself to reciprocate any of those joyous emotions as I took in her appearance, so familiar yet so unique.

She was reaching out to hold me and feel the sparks again, when I abruptly turned, intent on leaving her and keeping my distance. I walked away, truly feeling the struggle to be swift and fast in the suit I had been forced to wear, alongside the usual string necklace I wore around my neck and leather watch around my wrist.

I could feel the tension in being so close to my mate still had as I covered some substantial ground. Obviously I wasn't going to get her off my trail any time soon. All of a sudden she grabed my wrist, the watch also in her grip, and she tugged for me to stop. My wolf was urging me on to listen to her... to care.

I stopped. I spun around and looked into her green glassy eyes, and with as much strength as I could muster, I gritted through my teeth, "Let. Go. Of. Me. Right now."

She frowned and replied, "You're my mate."

My wolf was happy that she mentioned and felt the same way, but he was upset that I had just hurt our mate. This was the most connection I had made with my wolf since forever. I looked down at her strong grip on my hand and decided that I was probably much stronger than her anyway. I turned and walked off, confident in creating some space between us but realizing that as my wrist slipped through her hands, my watch came sliding off and was now in her possession.
