Eric scrubbed his face with his hands as he peered across to Tisha's pale face. Alpha Zulu One was being launched as he stood there. The contingency plan was worse case scenario material that they had all hoped would never be needed. Alpha Zulu One was essentially a lock down drag out for their species. The base was on lock down no one in or out unless granted strict permission. Civilians were being rushed into protective detail, descriptions of the offenders were being passed through the ranks in rapid order and a plan of attack was underway to hopefully neutralize the very real threat being posed to the race. The only problem is they did not truly know how many were involved in the group they were facing. He wandered over to Tisha, climbing onto the small bed with her, pulling her against him as he lay silently with her as the silence stretched out. He had no words to comfort her so he held her in silence. The cave did not have much other than the few things he had scattered as he built the little room inside it to escape to. A security system to alert him if someone got close to it, a secure line, a bed, a few MREs he had stashed and the hidden doors he had built to hide his little area from anyone who decided trespassing on private property was legal.
He dozed off for a short time still holding her tight against him. When he regained consciousness a short time later, he no longer had her in his grasp. He sat up, peering around him as he attempted to shake off the exhaustion. He slowly registered the sound of an alarm as he jumped from the bed to head to his security monitors. He found her crouched down next to the monitors, eyeing one that displayed the front of the cave in black and white. He hit a few buttons, turning the sound on for the camera and silencing the beeping of the alarm. He turned the sound up as 2 men approached the cave with guns drawn. As they got closer to the camera, their voices carried through the speakers as they spoke to each other.
"Are you sure this is the direction you saw them take? This is just an empty cave. There is no sign of a vehicle near here and we are wasting time. Boss man wants that woman back in custody or neutralized before she can blab about anything."
"Shut up Michael! I am sure they came this way. We traced the guy's cell phone heading in this direction and the guy that owns the property has ties to our mystery guy. Maybe we should go pay him a visit and find out what he knows about the guy. There is no way he would be leaving the guy all his stuff if he didn't know him somehow. The house is further up this poor excuse of a road."
"The man is in his 80's! That is just sick even for me. We can poke around and see if there is any sign they went to him and if there is then maybe we can question him and only as cops. There is a good chance they haven't announced the agents being dead yet so he won't know that we aren't anything else."
"Fine but we need to hurry up or its our hides on the rack so to speak. Let's get going, there isn't anything here."
The men holstered their weapons as they walked back towards a vehicle out of camera range. Eric stood slowly as he watched them walk away before grabbing a dagger and going through one of the hidden doors he had installed. He watched them drive up the beat up roadway towards the empty cottage he had left on the property. The original owner of the land that he had gotten it from had been a human that knew what he had been. The old man had lost his son in war and graciously accepted his help as he aged. When the man had passed into the next life he had left all his belongings to him as the only remaining family he considered he had left. He would not allow those men to defile the cottage with their presence. He told Tisha to remain inside the cave until his return. When he went to follow the men, he heard soft steps behind him, turning to find her scowling at him.
"You will not face them alone. I am an elite and can help take them out so there is no need for you to go alone. I need to do this. It's because of me they are even here."
"This isn't a negotiation Tisha."
"You're right Eric. It isn't and I am coming with you."
He eyed her, realizing that she was correct. He could not stop her from following and it was better he knew where she was than not knowing. He weighed out the pros and cons of attempting to order her back into the cave, giving up with the scowl he was still receiving. He held his finger to his lips as they made their way silently through the trees to the cottage that he had maintained as a memorial for the man that had given it to him. The men were walking around the cottage as they approached, crouching down to watch in silence. They looked pissed as they rummaged around to find any signs that they had been there. One of the men branched off, coming near where they hid to light a cigarette. The smoke drifted around him as he muttered to himself about what a waste of time it was to be here. Eric slowly crawled his way towards the man as he continued to puff on his cigarette. Like the grim reaper he was often compared to, he rose like a shadow of death, grabbing the man's mouth and running the blade across his throat. He dragged his thrashing body out of view as it slowly died down to twitches. The life drained from his wide unblinking eyes and mouth hung open in a silent scream. He slunk around to see the other man peering down at a phone in his hand. The man looked less than pleased as he read through what he could only assume was a message from whoever they answered to. As a silent wraith, he came up behind the man and repeated what he had done to the first one. He clamped a hand around the man's mouth, running the blade across his neck and letting him drop to the ground where he fell. He picked up the phone to read the messages, not surprised to see that it had been a group message to several different numbers. Whoever had sent the last message he could only assume was whoever was in charge and he was not happy. He was sending more men over to help find Tisha. As he feared, it was no longer a snatch and run but a neutralization mission. They could no longer try to grab her as it was to much of a risk. It was time to get her out of dodge. He smashed the mens' phones before heading back towards where he had left her to watch for any new surprises. Dear gods he was tired of fucking surprises.
