Jasper's POV
The Chapel was, and had always been my favourite place in Blue Glass. Although I wasn't religious in the slightest, even I had to admit that there was something ethereal about the Chapel's atmosphere. It was something that was almost alive, something almost palpable. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up on end as I entered the large oak doors, feeling the familiar feeling settle over me.
Alpha Bennett was stood in the pulpit. Power seemed to radiate off him like heat off the sun, and I would have shrank back if I didn't hold that same power myself. There was something in his stance that made him look like a king, but I supposed that was just the nature of his authority.
I cleared my throat. "Alpha Bennett?"
His gaze fell on me, and he lowered his head in respect, stepping off the pulpit. "Alpha Jasper," he greeted, shaking my hand with a solid grip. "And how be you?"
"Very well, thank you. And yourself?"
He smiled. "I am also well." The Alpha pushed up his sleeves. "And all is well in Blue Glass?"
I nodded in response, and he continued.
"Well, you may have heard about the recent attack on my pack."
Concern filled my gaze. "Oh yes, I heard. How is your pack handling it?"
Sadness entered the man's eyes, and I realised that I liked Alpha Bennett. He wasn't judgmental like the other Alphas. When he looked at me, it was as if he didn't care about anything he had ever heard about my past. He just saw the Jasper who was stood in front of him. I appreciated it.
"They are devastated at our loss. Ten of our pack perished from the attack. They were burned a few hours ago on a pyre. May their souls rest in peace."
Tears shone in the Alpha's eyes, and I wasn't quite sure what to say. I settled for an apology. "I'm sorry. If my pack and I can do anything to help..."
The look of determination that took over Alpha Bennett's face made me stop mid-sentence. "Actually, that is what I came here to discuss."
He sat on a pew, and gestured for me to take a seat beside him. Once I was seated, he began.
"Your pack is the one of the strongest packs not only in the country, but in the world. You have been attacked many times but the opposing packs cannot so much as enter your perimeters."
"So you want guidance?" I asked, although something told that the Alpha hadn't come here for advice. It wasn't as if I ran a freaking newspaper column.
Sure enough, Alpha Bennett shook his head. "No. Alpha Jasper, I have come here to ask for your pack's alliance."
I opened my mouth to speak, but he held a hand up. "Wait. Before you give me an answer, you should know what being in alliance with the Moon pack means. In very simple terms, it means that if my pack was to be attacked, the Sensai pack would step in as defence, and vice versa." His gaze became slightly distant. "We will both maintain control of our packs and our territories will still remain the same, but if someone is to cross over onto your territory, you will not kill them."
"What about a fight to the death?" I asked, finally managing to get a word in.
Alpha Bennett looked puzzled. "What about it?"
